About selling a Porsche

I am selling my car to get a newer Porsche. The ads have been posted for about a month now and I must say it has been an experience.

There are some interesting people out there that contact sellers.

Some are truly interested my car, others want to talk about cars and others I think might just be bored.

Then there are those that contact you that want to advertise your car somewhere for a fee, some that want to send you a certified check for more than you are selling it for and then of course there are the lowballers. I think that there are others that are just collecting pictures of Porsches.

Right now my strategy is to advertise on Porsche related special interest boards. I have not tried PML, Hemmings, Autotrader or Ebay. If I get one more one line email that says "Why R U selling?" I think I will scream. Better yet I get unsolicited commentary like "your car is not an original 911E." Well yeah, that's the point...I installed a bigger motor to go faster.

Years ago when I was selling my 78 911 targa I put it in the front yard of my house with a for sale sign. Never again! Several interested "buyers" wanted to give me a down payment and make payments every month when they had the money. Uh, you better talk to a bank about that. Others wondered if the car was a souped up Volkswagon. Sigh.

Is this the way it is? What have other experienced? Better yet any advice?

Thanks.

Chuck

Ebay may not be such a bad idea, if you have good photographs. You might be surprised how high bidding will go.

Wow, I'm surprised you haven't been overwhelmed by scam artists....and Bank Checks for too much.

I've had good results with Ebay and Autotrader.

I sold my '88 Targa a few months ago, and had just about the same experience. The lowballers and Nigerian scam artists were out in force. But the ones that really get to me are the promisers. They drive the car, say they are extremely interested, and will come back tomorrow/call tomorrow/don't worry/it's a done deal. It's like they don't have the guts to just say "Thanks, nice car, but not for me."

If you want a real treat, try selling a car that appeals to the "youts." A couple years ago I sold a pristine, souped up 300ZX Twin Turbo. The thing did 0-60 in the high 4 second range, and test drives were interesting to say the least. Never again will I let a 22 year old stranger drive my cars....

I recently bought my /80 coupe via an ad I saw in Ebay. I didn't purchase it through Ebay though the seller used it as an ad tool and I used it as a search tool. We both were successful. I used Ebay to advertise my own 914 that I was selling at the time and that worked as well. I had a fella fly down from SF to test drive it - he handed me the cash and drove it home. Simple as that.

I've tried autotrader online to sell two cars both unsuccessfully. The thing that really blows about the site is that you have no idea how many hits your ad is getting where as with Ebay at least you know that people are interested by the "watchers counter" and you certainly know that it is getting looked at by the hits counter. Those two tools alone let you know if you're at least getting an audience.

Of course - Pelican has a BBS page dedicated to the sale of porsches and I have used it as well to generate leads in my search. I also put my car up there but got little response for it. I've seen plenty of better luck on the board.
