8-year-old girl suspended for jello shots at school

article here: http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-school-jell-o-shots,0,124747,print.story?coll=sns-ap-nationworld-headlines

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS -- An 8-year-old girl was suspended for nine days for bringing to school what appeared to be about 30 "Jell-O shots" -- though it was unclear whether they contained alcohol.

The incident occurred Nov. 29, as the girl stood after classes outside Geraldine Boudreaux Elementary School in Terrytown, a New Orleans suburb. A teacher spotted liquid dripping out of the student's bookbag and found what looked like the small cups of alcohol-laced gelatin that are sold in bars, schools spokesman Jeff Nowakowski said.

The girl told the principal that her mother, who works in a bar, makes alcoholic shots at home and sells them at work. The fourth-grader said her mother had instructed her to take the shots to school and sell them, three for $1, to make some money for Christmas, Nowakowski said.
My favorite line in the whole article:
The gelatin was turned over to the sheriff's department for testing to see if it contained alcohol.

From the article;

"The school system's position is, it doesn't matter if it had alcohol in it or not," Nowakowski said.

Drew - It's because she was selling it as a shot... it'd be like bringing a squirt-gun to screwel

I think the schools position on this is simply that they cannot be sure what conditions the food product was made in. You wouldn't want your child to eat something that was made on the floor of the garage with waste water as an ingredient.

I feel sorry for the 8 yo. She was repeating what her mom says or does without realizing the possible consequences. A Parent teacher meeting would have been more appropriate.

"The mother must also allow school officials to test her daughter's hair for signs of drug use, Nowakowski said"
Now there's a challenge to your 4th Ammendment rights.

Don't you realize?

Working in a bar is a crime!

I think a mother telling her child to sell Jell-O-shots at school so she can have money for Christmas should be a crime. I wonder what this whore will tell her child to sell during the summer.

If there is booze in the jello, I agree. If it's just jello, a parent/teacher meeting would seem adequate.

Some states even ban home made cookies for birthday parties as well as baked good sales, since the ingredients cannot be verified.

The more we protect ourselves, the more freedoms we potentially lose.

Once knew a fellow that baked a certain type of brownie in Home Econ. class, during class, in high school. Imagine if those had hit the bake sale table! Never participated, but saw more than you'd like to hear, or believe. That was the early 90's.
