My friend's mom was a member NOW and was into the whole women's lib movement. I asked her about it one day, because she didn't seem like a fruit-loop to me. She said it was a lot of fun to protest, fight, and to feel important, but when they all turned into lesbians, she left!

Oh yeah, she's now a home-ec teacher.

Yes, things were different back in the 50's, but I don't think it was that drastic. The 'over the top' line for me was: "Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might has gone through that day."

Z, I believe it is real. I heard Walter E. Williams talking about it last year. He had/has it posted on his site too. Ahhhhh, the good ole' days

Just checked Snopes and they say they don't know for sure.

That's been floating around the internet for at least 4 years. It's not that far fetched when you think of some of the other true stuff that people of the day were told.

My mother (now in her 70's) assures me that this was the way she was taught, not only at home but in public school. Her "position" in life was to see to the "needs" of her family and her husband was part of the family.
As an aside to this she was telling me that being the wife of an Army officer she had a "handbook" (an official U.S. Army publication) of how to be a proper Officers wife. And she followed it with out hesitation.
Times sure have changed. My parents were happy in their marrage and stayed best friends untill my father passed.
