Another Close Brush With The Law.

Or, 'why one should NEVER rely completely on a radar detector'. I was traveling down the Interstate the other day in the Cayenne. Traffic was extremely light, maybe 1-2 cars every mile of so. So I would sprint up to 120 or so between cars. I always slow down to 80 or so when I pass anybody. Then quickly sprint back up to speed. Anyway, this goes on for 15-20 miles when I notice a car 1-2 miles back is gaining on me ..... Hmmmm, am I imagining things or what. Detector is silent. So I keep watching and the car keeps gaining. Hmmm, maybe I better reign it in a bit here. So I slow down to 78 or so. The car is now gaining on me big time and it's the friggin' State Police. Crap! He pulls up next to me and slows down to match my speed. I finally glance over and the cop in the passenger seat is giving me the thumbs up!!! Then they floor it and they're gone. I don't think they ever saw me going fast, just checking out the vehicle. Whew!

This is the 4th time I've gotten out of a big ticket with this thing. Once, a State cop nailed me with radar at 87MPH and let me go.

Looking at your web site, for your 71...
Quote:
Top Speed = calculated to be 145MPH (of course, I never exceed the posted speed limit, so speeds over 70MPH have never been verified).

I'm w/ tabs on that.
I think cops don't mind so much, those who drive very aware of their surroundings. It's the idiots hurlling down the highway, riding behind the wheel of some POS that I would expect they hand-out tickets to.

i had the same experience the day before thanksgiving. I left work around 3AM, and was in a rush to get home. There was maybe one other car on the highway for the entire 20mile ride home, and i was busy keeping the needle between the 4 and 8liters/100km (yes my gas mileage gauge is in metric) at somewhere around 90 mph with sprints of 110 for an exit or so (straight line only).

I get off at my exit and cruise doing the speedlimit, maybe a little more, because there are cops that always hide in the median between the trees. I look at every opening the entire way down this road, seeing nothing. I happen to glance up at my rearview and see that nice pair of Crown Victoria headlights tailgating me. No sooner than I did that did he flip the lights on, and I pulled over. Turned out to be a statey that was following me since I got onto the hwy some 20miles back with no lights on.

Turned the car off, put my keys on the dash, had my license and reg and all that stuff ready and put my hands on the wheel. As he walked up to the car, right away I guess he knew I wasnt going anywhere lol. Explained to me that I was doing a little over the speed limit (90 in a 55 and doing 55 in a 45). I thought for sure I was done for. He comes back a few minutes later hands me my stuff and tells me to 'slow down next time'. Which is immediatley followed by "one of the other guys at the precinct has a 911 and a 944" and he asked me a few questions about it. Few moments later and a 'good night officer', I was on my way.

Thank you again Porsche for once again saving my ass. I think its cuse of the name, cops seem to treat us with a little more respect than the ricer kid thats flying around in his honda or his EVO, STi, or his SRT-4.

Just don't make the mistake of getting pulled over with a dozen doughnuts in the passenger seat.

You guys may be right. Although I certainly wouldn't rely on the theory .... the time I got radared at 87MPH, the State Cop was asking me all sorts of questions about the vehicle. He hadn't seen one before, but knew all about it. So he was obviously into performance cars. I also explained to him that I was on a 450+ mile 1-day business trip.
