5,000 Americans scalded each year removing radiator caps

Another reason to drive an air-cooled 911.:)

NHTSA shifts focus to initiatives with greatest potential to save lives, prevent serious injuries
http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=101366
WASHINGTON -- As many as 5,000 Americans are scalded each year when they remove vehicle radiator caps while engines are hot..............But after 12 years of study, federal regulators have dropped their plan for a new rule that would require automakers to equip cars and trucks with safer radiator caps...................... NHTSA officials say the number of scald injuries from radiator caps is far lower today than it was when the agency began considering a rule in the early 1990s. Automakers have improved designs to reduce the risk that hot coolant will spray motorists when they remove radiator caps, agency officials note.

I dont get it, most cars dont have radiator caps anymore since a long time.

red ufo 12-10-2004 01:04 PM

Then we need a pre emptive strike on the radiators.

Hugh R 12-10-2004 01:08 PM

Radiators don't injure people, people do. We need to ban radiators to protect the public.

ubiquity0 12-10-2004 01:12 PM

I will only use my radiator cap in self defence.

Your tax dollars well spent.:)

Consider the proposition that it is necessary and appropriate for people to be scalded for improperly removing radiator caps.

Remember the old VW add with the guy in the suit, holding a briefcase? He's standing in front of his Bug with the front hood up and a big geyser of steam exploding out in front of him. I believe the copy simply read "impossible".

Yep, I'm sure they're stockpiling WMD's, let's get them before they get us....

Wrong, wrong, wrong! The correct leftie response should be:

What about the antifreeze in the steam? Isn't that putting a hole in the ozone layer?

It's a diabolical scheme by the evil neocons to perpetrate vote fraud by damaging the psyche of dumb liberals (who should get a Darwin Award for removing a cap from a hot cooling system in the first place). Said damage is along the lines of a Skinner Box, shock the rat, and he won't pull the lever in the voting machine, thus guaranteeing global warming, cheap oil, and a McDonald's on every street corner of every third world village.

audi2.7t 12-10-2004 08:45 PM

Another thought, even though you would think that anyone dumb enough to get scalded this way would be un-hireable, the reality is the vast majority probably hold median income jobs, how much is this costing in lost man-hours per year ?........ on the other hand, educated and un-educated people alike are still contracting AIDS, how could we possibly expect them guard themselves against the well known dangers of opening a hot radiator...... excuse me, I have to go stick my tongue on a freezing metal pole outside....

Serge914 12-11-2004 05:29 AM

So will we see that funny looking lawyer on Speed telling us that we should call him if we were injured opening a radiator cap ?

CJFusco 12-11-2004 05:42 AM

is it too much to ask just to put a little sticker next to the radiator cap that say something like

CAUTION - ACHTUNG
Removing radiator cap when car is still hot will cause steaming, bubbling antifreeze/coolant to spray all over you... and you don't even want that stuff on you when it's cool, trust me!

Halliburton should not be allowed to make radiators with unsafe amounts of armour.

But they are working closely with suppliers to speed up production of additional armored units, until such time you can cover the top of the radiator with sandbags and hope nothing worse than mildly hot water water or 9mm projectiles come shooting out...

It's Bush's fault.

People this stupid are everywhere. I'm actually surprised the number is that small. These are the same people who couldn't tell you what size tires they have, or the air pressure, or even whether or not tires have air in them. In fact, they're the same ones who couldn't drive the line through a corner if it was painted orange, and who stop their cars at green lights for no apparent reason. This is the same crowd who sometimes fires the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal -- and is then befuddled by the confused reactions of nearby drivers who didn't anticipate their lane change. These people are the ones who haven't ever changed their own oil, largely because they don't realize their car has oil. They sometimes say things like "I'm thinking about getting rid of this car; the tires are getting a little bald." These people are surprised to learn that coffee dispensed at your local Starbucks is exceedingly hot, that McDonalds food will make you fat, and that smoking is addictive.

Yes, Virginia, Americans are really that dumb.

Need a coolant additive that kills sperm. Permanently. Time to chlorinate the gene pool.
