My question is why in hell did they handcuff the student? This was not needed and was overkill but then cops and school admin's need to look and feel powerful these days...
When I went to school I carried a knife in my pocket every day, and when we were shooting on the gun club carried a .22 in the car in the school parking lot. Did not have a problem then but this past generation of parents who do not know how to raise children with values and kneejerk reaction to isolated incidents has taken our society in a dangerous slide downhil IMHO... this country is going to he!! in a handbasket, we allow the sale of automatic machine guns to criminals but when a school girl innocently brings scissors to school, she is arrested, handcuffed, and brought to the police station. wow
by the way, a sharpened pencil or coat hanger can be just as lethal as a pair of scissors. Last edited by on-ramp; 12-12-2004 at 08:43 AM.. |

From GunCite: ----- It has been unlawful since 1934 (The National Firearms Act) for civilians to own machine guns without special permission from the U.S. Treasury Department. Machine guns are subject to a $200 tax every time their ownership changes from one federally registered owner to another, and each new weapon is subject to a manufacturing tax when it is made, and it must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) in its National Firearms Registry. To become a registered owner, a complete FBI background investigation is conducted, checking for any criminal history or tendencies toward violence, and an application must be submitted to the BATF including two sets of fingerprints, a recent photo, a sworn affidavit that transfer of the NFA firearm is of "reasonable necessity," and that sale to and possession of the weapon by the applicant "would be consistent with public safety." The application form also requires the signature of a chief law enforcement officer with jurisdiction in the applicant's residence. Since the Firearms Owners' Protection Act of May 19, 1986, ownership of newly manufactured machine guns has been prohibited to civilians. Machine guns which were manufactured prior to the Act's passage are regulated under the National Firearms Act, but those manufactured after the ban cannot ordinarily be sold to or owned by civilians. --- And sale of ANY firearm to criminals (convicted felons) has been illegal for ages.

yeah, i know it's "illegal", but they get them anyway, because the system makes it easy, they are easy to get. just turn on the news.

In my son's school, they have there pencle kits with scissors but they are the kind that are not pointy at the ends. The school sends out a "spec" letter for supplys each term. Certain things deemed hazardous don't appear.
The other day he came home and told my wife and me that he needed to get Ms. Martin a new stapler. "Dad, mizz Mardn asted me to get her a stapler so we got to go to Target and get her one". I looked at my wife and wonder where the heck our taxes are going if I have start personally supplying the Kindergarden supplys. Being weak, went to Target, the boy picked out a $7 blue Swingline that he knew she would like. He was so proud. I took him into class the next day. He presented her with the stapler. The little guy fealy like he just cured cancer. She looked at me quizically but thanked him graciously. He went to his table and you could see the little guy beaming with pride. His teacher asked me why she recieved such a gift, I told her that she said she needed one. "Oh my gosh, I asked him to get me the stapler - meaning the one on my desk - but I guess I wasn's specific. I was wondering why he just said 'Yes Ma'am' and sat in his seat.

On-Ramp, Not sure which system you are talking about. I have lived and worked in Denmark, Germany and Saudi and they are about three of the most difficult places to get a weapons permit in in the world. I hold a permit for a weapon in two of the three above mentioned countries so know a bit about weapons there as well as here in America. The system you mention makes it very difficult to legally obtain a automatic, or even single shot weapon these days. Nothing easy about it and you have to pass a federal background check and in many cases a several day waiting period. What would you suggest? Wait 6 months and have a probe inserted somewhere to track the new owner? That said, you can find an automatic weapon in any country if you wish and its an illegal sale of a weapon. There is no "system" that will totally control weapons, otherwise the convicts would not have them smuggled into prison. England banned small guns years ago and the criminals still have them, its just the law abiding citizens who are now unarmed and defenseless. Just which part of this system would you suggest changing??? Believe you might want to turn the news off and stop watching the liberal press for a while. JoeA

Joeaksa,
what you say is very logically theoretical....but the reality remains: guns are very easy to get in the USA, just watch the news, CNN or Fox, doesn't make a difference. |

OnRamp,
Guns are very easy to get ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD for the criminals. Please open your eyes and realize this! Even in Japan, one of the most guarded societies, the criminals have GUNS! Again, stop watching the liberal news and you might just get more accurate information! Joe A

We're bring up our children to be a bunch of ******* crybabies. You can't protect everyone from everything. Cops who cuff a 10 year old girl, aren't "doing their job". That's just stupid.
Not to spawn another thread, but on-ramp, WTF? "The system", in no way "makes it easy" for criminals to get "automatic weapons". I want some of what you're smoking...

It's ridiculous, every topic ends up being the GOP vs the Liberals. C'mon, does the gov't ever do anything wrong? Can you be conservative and question the gov't?

sure - and you should. In fact, the leaders will change if enough voices are heard or a single, well placed voice heard (that enlisted man heckling Rummy on armourment).
You guys want to make an impact on this country? Start with your town government. Thats what is going to affect you directly. You get your chops down with handling that and maybe you can get a bill up to the state floor - who knows? Other men less talented than you have down so, the only difference is their passion. Look at MADD, the Amber Law or the Brady Bill - think those were strarted by folks who had an idea without passion? I just know that my kids will have a respect for firearms, knives, and power tools as well as cars. If we keep these kids safe from harms way we will end up hurting them worse in the long run. We are trying to protectthem to the point they are becoming, as dHoward put it, WUSSIES. Do your selves a favor, buy your kid a Daisy Red Rider and a 300 pack of BB's this Christmas. And don't forget the Swiss Army Knife. This will give you a chance to teash'm how to shot a gun, wittle a stick and be a kid.

My little brother at 10 was taken down to the police station by the parents of a kid (from Saudi Arabia) because he got into a scrap with the Saudi kid (his age mind you) and the kid accused him of smoking drugs and my brother goes "yeah you want some?" Next thing you know he's in the back of a pickup truck - effectively abducted by the kid's parents. Afterwards, the other parents around the neighborhood literally held protest in front of the guy's house. -Not to mention when my dad got a hold of Mr. Saudi afterwards was about to drop the hammer on him with his 1911. No joke. rjp
