Believe it or not, my jeweler friend tells me Costco offers great value. (If there is such a thing) If they don't have what you want, they will get it for you. Even loose stones.

Some years ago, when I was shopping for an engagement ring for my wife, I looked at the ones at Costco. Thinking that there may be some better quality deals out there, I shopped around at various jewelry stores. I have a degree in geology and know a little about gems, but not an expert. Every place I went had the same quality or worse for more money. The thing that decided it for me to buy at Costco was after looking at a ring at a local and respected jewler. He offered a ring for a few hundred dollars more (than a similar one at Costco) for me to look at. When I asked for a loupe (sp?) to look at it, I saw it had a huge crack right along the top of the stone. At that point, I gave him the ring back & left without a word & bought the ring at Costco.

I'd buy in person, actually. Also, as a BIG hint, get them from someplace that has a warranty similar to Marks & Morgan (big chain store) - free stone replacement in case of loss. And, make *sure* to adhere to their inspection/cleaning schedule (every 6 mos.), and get it all in writing.

If you search back to last Friday, you'll see a post of mine about how the wifes diamond went missing out of her engagement ring. Well, I *did* buy it at M&M, but *she* hasn't had it checked out in 3 years. If she had, the ring would be back already. Since she didn't, it will be a few years before it gets replaced (single income family, 2 kids, only way i have a p-car is I inherited it), and when it does get replaced, I'll be out about $3k. Which I'd rather spend on having the chrome redone on my 356.

We have always been happy with Shane Company. you can shop online and they have a 30 day return guarantee. She can also trade her earings in later for full credit towards buying up.

FYI: id10IT - add an home owners insurance writer to you policy to cover her jewelry. Get it appraised and file that with the insurance company. Covers you for loss, theft, etc.
