resurrecting expired black plates in Ca.
A while back I posted a query on how or even if it was possible to resurrect expired black plates in California. The plate in question is on a '64 356 that was last registered in '78.
Long story short is that it can be done. My oldest daughter Danielle (sometimes lurking here) manages the DMV paper at a Mercedes dealership here in the valley. With the appropriate paperwork and some kind of DMV VooDoo and $93.00 cash she's brought the registration current and we've been able to keep the plates. ![]() And the current pink slip w/plate number. ![]() Needless to say this papa's very proud of his girl.

That's awesome to bring back the black or back in black as ACDC put it. I am curious if the DMV destroyed many of the black plates as the car were totaled or destroyed etc. I don't htink one would be able to find a set in the junk yard anymore.

I still have the blue with yellow letter plates on my car. I haven't seen the old black with yellow letters in a long time. Are the black with yellow letter plates the ones you're talking about, Kev?

Were these the plates originally assigned to the car, or were they from another car that you wanted to assign to the 356? The former is possible, the latter isn't (or isn't supposed to be). If you have the original plates and can show, by previous reg papers, that the car was originally registered with them, then it doesn't really take a lot of mojo to make it happen.

Yes these were the plates originally assigned to the car when it was new. We had the paper trail (expired reg certs and pink slip from the first owner) to support that fact. I was told originally by someone at the DMV that once the plates go NRF (no record on file) that they could not be used again. Typical of the DMV you seldom get the same answere twice so you keep asking untill you get the answere you want. Danielle knew who to ask and how to push the paper so we got the result we wanted.

Your car just wasn't registered for a number of years...or it was in nonoperational status...then it really is no big deal to bring the plates into active status...as it allready has an assigned set of plates.
YBG....would indicate 1968 as the year of issuance...the Black plates were issued from 1962 through 1969 .....AAA000 through ZZZ999. In 1962 the State recalled the Yellow and Black plates, replacing them on existing cars with the Black Plates...thats why you don't see any fifties cars with Yellow Plates.... I have the orginal Black Plates on my Mustang...I keep that car registered and insured in CA as I don't want to lose the Plates...even though I live here in LV...

California black plates stopped in the early 60s... lots of discussion about this on 356talk. If you have a set of plates (must have both) and they are original to the car, and you can prove it, you are good to go. Otherwise, it can get to be a big hassle. I've also read that the AAA can do the whole thing on your behalf, and there are some private companies that deal with it for a small fee.
Here in Florida, you can use YOM plates if your car is more than 30 years old, you have a plate appropriate for the year your car is, and that plate must be inspected at the DMV office in Tallahassee to make sure it is genuine and in good enough condition to be read by law enforcement, etc.

Black plates were used 63-72, IIRC.
Then you have "'56 plates" And "'51 plates" ![]()

Nope sorry ...1962 trough 1969 for the Black Plates...1970 model year cars had Blue and Yellow plates...AAA000... I know I was there and remember...
CA over the years changed the colour of the Plates...in the 1950s it was Yellow and Black, and I know before that they used the Black Plates...but that was all before my time...so I just don't know the correct sequence...

Tabs is correct on this one. If you need proof, watch old episodes of "Adam 12." Look for plates and goofy buzz cuts. No mullets, though.

My gawd, how will I ever live this down? I was concentrating so hard on finding pix of my bus with early plates that I got the black plate years wrong - the shame! Especially since I've written a couple of FAQ's on this same topic!

I picked up a couple sets of CA plates like those pictured at a flea market in Indiana 15 or so years ago just 'cause they looked cool. Any idea if they're worth anything?
