![]() In my school we're trained to avoid edge-to-edge contact if at all possible. In fact, all blocking or deflecting motions are specifically taught such that the edge can't contact the opponent's blade. The spine (mune) and side ridge and flat (shinogi and shinogi-ji) of the blade tends to be a softer, "springier" metal than the edge. Thus it's tougher but wouldn't hold an edge as well as the hardened edge material. Should edge-to-edge contact occur, it all depends on the quality and intended purpose of the blade: how well the forge welds were done, carbon content of the blade (higher isn't necessarily better), how well the blade has been heat treated and then drawn (tempered), the cross section of the blade (how much convexity or niku there is to the edge flat or ji)...so many factors that it's really impossible to go into it all. The constant edge-to-edge thwacking you see in the movies would result in a pair of saw blades in a short period of time. But that's Hollywood for ya. ![]()
