I can sure remember watching that guy play football. His performances defied description. RIP, Reggie.

I know thw whole story Adolph. Reggie is from right here in Chattanooga TN. A while back they named a street after him. During a discussion about this on the local sports talk show I called in. I said that Reggie was an embarrasment. After signing his $15 million contract he sent a gift to Howard HIgh, the poor inner city high school from which he graduated. He sent them six pairs of shoulder pads. That's right, six pairs of shoulder pads. When Reggie decided that he didn't want to play in Philadelphia any more, he stated that "he didn't care about the money. he wanted to play where he could win." Thank God that the highest offer came from somewhere he could win. Then Reggie, upon retirement, spoke to the Wisconsin legislature. He said that, and I'll paraphrase, "Jewish people have a talent for numbers & money. Mexicans have a talent for living in one house with a whole bunch of people. Black people have a talent for celebration & worship." Yes he really said this stuff, but he wasn't done.
When the burnings of black churches took place, Reggie was at the forefront, trashing, Chattanooga, Knoxville, The University of Tennesse, The State of Tennessee & white people in general. You see a small church that Reggie was involved in had burned. Donations the rebuild the small, rickety church totaled nearly a million dollars in cash. In addition, a load of building supplies more than sufficient to rebuild the church was donated, with the lead truck being piloted the last few miles by none other than Jessee Jackson. Now the total is over a million or so but no rebuilding is happening. Then the news came out that the burning was a not related to white hate groups but to the pastor himself. It seems the good reverend had a history of heroin & crack cocaine problems & was living quite well off the donations. Not to be overcome by reason, Reggie goes to the court & tells the Judge that the good reverend should be remanded to Reggie's custody as there is no need for prison. The judge disagreed & sent him to the big house. At this time Reggie was living in Maryville TN. His neighbors hated them & were ready to file suit when the White's moved. Bottom line is it's sad that a 43 yr old dies, but that doesn't make him a good guy. He was an embarrasment to Chattanooga, Knoxville, UT, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

He played football like a lightning-quick D-11 dozer.

Nice summary, Mule. The church money is long gone. Your last sentence couldn't say it better.

Arguably the best defensive end ever. Two talented offensive linemen could perhaps buy the quarterback one additional second.
Then again, perhaps the most important thing is that he could not be as perfect in his personal life as the folks who post here. I wonder what you angels are hoping we'll say when you cross over. Perhaps we should dwell on the failures. Like I say, watching Reggie White play football was thrilling.

Yeah, and John Elway's a drunk and a chain smoker, Jim Brown beats up women for fun, OJ is a murderer.
Anything bad to say about Walter Payton and Johnny Unitus while we're trashing not just retired but DEAD football players?
