Hi,
I'm thinking about a getting a Lexus GS 430 as a daily driver? Any thoughts on this car? Or is there a Lexus forum around that I could check out? Chuck

The BMW 540 would be another option but at 6'4" I don't seem to fit well in BMWs. My budget for a "pre-owned" car would be between $25K -30K so I think that would be a 1999 -2002 model (?)

My dad is selling his '99 E430. 64K miles, extended warranty up to a little over 100K miles. It is silver with a grey interior, and has most of the options (heated seats, orthopedic seats, Bose, etc.). He is asking around $20K for it. PM me if you're interesed.
WE've had a Lexus in our family for over 10 years, and it has been a wonderful car. Few problems, and still a very smooth ride. The Mercedes has also been trouble-free and drives great. Both the GS 430 and the E430 are very good cars. Best bet is to drive both and see which you prefer. Keep in mind that Mercedes and Lexus offer certified used cars at their dealerships, with a warranty up to 100K miles. That goes a long way towards overcoming reliability fears. Best of Luck. edit- I forgot to add, we have also had BMWs in our family. In general, they tended to give more problems than the Mercedes or Lexus, but they were also the best driving of the bunch.

Never driven the GS 430 but I have 2 of the lower end models...the ES 300 and the IS 300. Both are great cars! I would assume that the upper end 430 is even better.

We had a new 1992 LS400 for 5 years and 140K miles. Build quality was great, the V-8 was even better. The only problem was that it was totally without soul.

Great car, unbelieveable fit, finish and performance in that $$ range. Maintenance is very, very low. Problem is that I too think think the Japenese cars lack soul. They do everything almost perfectly.......maybe too perfectly for some. There seems to be little 'mystic' about them. Like when's the last time you noticed one drive by and... ...."man, I have GOT to get one of those!!"

I have a GS400 which I got new in 99. Awesome car, beats most cars out there which are in the same class plus, it never fails. The engineers at Toyota know how to build them....
Resale values are pretty good as well. Merc's quality is not up to smuff when you factor in how much you are paying. Not a lot of sould I guess but, I'll take most Merc's out there and blow their doors off ! Plus, did I mention, it always works !
