The wonders of socal.

Well winter actually arrived in socal this year more or less and I couldnt be happier. I have been itching to go skiing for years, havent hit the slopes in about 6 years which sucks I know. So yesterday my friend and I decided on a whim to check out Mt. Baldy. For all you socal skiers and boarders this place is awesome. Yeah the lifts sucks, but the skiing is incredible. Everything was covered with fresh snow, skies were blue, weather was perfect and we had 5 feet of virgin snow to play in.

Almost everything on the mtn. is a diamond run since it is decently steep and covered with trees, a truely wonderful place to ski if you have good technical skills and arent intimidated by ice and trees. I LOVE this kind of skiing, my dad used to be on the us ski team and pushed me really hard when I was younger. We debated going to mammoth or big bear and mtn high but mt baldy was just so much better IMO.

It gets better though, we left around 2pm, we got there at 8 when the mtn. opened. Then we drove down to HB and surfed in the afternoon. Where else can you ski in the morning, surf in the afternoon and see a show at the laugh factory at night?

Happy holidays, happy new year and I am glad I live in socal.

No not really, the surf on the north shore of oahu is much better than socal at this time of year and there is better skiing in switzerland but I can handle the compromise.

Really just wanted to let socal skiers and boarders know that if they like a challenge then mt baldy is the place to go. big bear sucks, mammoth is the drive, same with tahoe and mtn high is all the local kids thinking they should be sponsored snowboarders.

yeah, but Baldy can get downright *nasty* when the weather blows in. The coldest I've ever been in my life was coming down from the lodge on the lift one afternoon (couldn't ski to the base).

I can see that. The chairs on the lift had about 3-4 inches of ice swept back in one direction from the wind, all the trees were frozen into a blown shape as well. We got lucky had blue skies, about 30 degrees and fresh snow. If the weather is good I say that is the place to ski in california if you get bored with the nonsense at all the other mtns. For once in a long time I fealt a little challenged with what was in front of me.

Hey, I live in New England, and I've surfed and snowboarded in the same day! It's doable, but normally the conditions for one of the activities is going to either suck or be tough. (See avatar)
