Ex-Dems chief charged in drug raid

PUNTA GORDA -- Police arrested prominent businessman and community leader Vernon Elmo Peeples Jr. on Thursday night on marijuana distribution charges following a raid at his house in the downtown historic district.

Investigators said about 11 pounds of marijuana valued at $44,000 was stuffed into two black suitcases in the house Peeples shared with a woman. Peeples, former chairman of the Charlotte County Democratic Executive Committee, was charged with three felony drug crimes, including possession of marijuana with the intent to sell, police said.

Police said they found cocaine on a metal plate with a rolled up dollar bill next to it. Authorities also seized cocaine and drug paraphernalia, including small plastic bags and scales.

Peeples is from a well-known family that traces its Florida roots back nine generations. His father, Vernon Elmo Peeples Sr., is a Democrat who held the District 72 state House seat for 14 years starting in 1982
