Question for StarWars geeks

Since the DVD trilogy has been out, the hardcore fan base has been murmuring their disapproval of certain changes that were not in the original films.

One such "crucial" change was where Han Solo fired first at the bounty hunter in the cantina scene, instead of returning fire. There are others, but this one just stuck in my mind.

What edition(?) of the DVD would I have to look for that does not include the modernized changes? Where? Ebay only or are there fansites that sell the "correct" versions?

Overpaid Slacker 01-12-2005 07:41 AM

dave --
If you find DVD versions w/o the "corrections" -- including especially the three "ghosts" that have been changed at the end of the trilogy -- PLEASE let me know.

I know these films are Lucas', but they belong to the world in a sense, and I'm disappointed at the changes I've heard he's made.

I heard the same folks who produced this 'new and improved' Star Wars Trilogy set are looking into producing a new version of the Wizard of Oz - one where the first half is colorized.

Just kidding,

There is no DVD with the original greedo firing first. These only exist on VHS and laser disc.

If you look on Ebay you might find DVD that were conversions from the laserdisc, and thats the best you can get. I have Empire on laserdisc before it was changed and hope to transfer it to DVD when I find a cheap player.

}{arlequin 01-12-2005 07:59 AM

now that's a piece of esoteric stuff... not like I need another component, but maybe I should just pick up a laserdisc player. Isn't the quality better than a DVD anyway?

UFO, the transfer looks like a way to do this. Then the copyright might rear its ugly head.

red ufo 01-12-2005 08:02 AM

Laserdisc is just about as good as DVD quality wise. You can probably pick one up cheap at a pawn shop, then find the used laser discs. To bypass the copy protection you'll need a device that overrides it. After your done with the transfer to DVD. Sell all that stuff back to the pawn shop.

Sell a copy on Ebay every other month. There are so many SW items for sale there its impossible to police.

George Lucas and his lame-ass revisionist machine needs to be stopped. At any cost.

When the Trilogy came out revised, I was upset. When Starwars episode 1 came out, I was practicing for the real deal by kicking a Lucas effigy in the balls repeatedly. When episode 2 came out, I pushed over store displays and frightened children by mimicing sex acts with action figures.

But the changes in THX1138 tear it. Lucas begone from me, I send you to hell!

Z-man...
After the racist piece of crap that was Episode 1, I can never forgive the man. Never.

There was a Southpark episode ripping on him a Speilberg about all of this...

As far as laserdisc editions, are ALL of them the "proper" movies? There are the original ones, the newer (w/ thx) releases, and then there are 2 different box sets as well.

84porsche 01-12-2005 11:54 AM

I hope when they release the 6 pack of all the movies that they include the original versions with them. My brother has the 3 video tape collectors set that he got about 10 years ago with the original films.

Saintly 01-12-2005 11:58 AM

you basicly have:
original movie
original videos and lazer disk
special edition videos - color touch-ups, a few small additions to the movie.
DVD edition - lots of color changes, many sceen changes, some charicter changes (like lukes dad at the end of ROTJ).
here is a good review about the changes (with pics)

I went to Episode 1 completely housed after a looong day of drinking with college buddies. That movie was such garbage I never watched it again. So, fill me in on the racist bit? I must have completely missed it while drunk.

There are DVD versions floating around which are dumps of the Laserdisc version ie widescreen and not messed up Lucas' pointless and stupid "mods". They are not legit but they are out there. The mods I dislike the most about the DVD release are:
1. The Greedo scene
2. Changing Boba Fetts voice to that rediculous NZ accent of the "new" Boba Fett.
3. In the Revenge of the Jedi, having the "new" Annakin Skywalker materialise as a spirit on Endor in the celebration at the end.
- Lots of mods - all crap - like the new generation of Star Wars movies.

My question to George Lucas : "What happened to you man, you USED to be cool!!!??"

I'm not a star wars geek but I think it has something to do with only white people being cast in the move
Unless you count Darth's voice over...

Jar Jar Binks: Jamaican/Black Toady
"Me so horny massa, me love you long time"

Stupid Flying Guy thing that owns Ani: Shifty/Dishonest Arab

Trade Federation: Heartless Chinee army/diplomats

You must have been really drunk, I was drunk too and I was literally clenching my teeth trying not to scream and start punching things. I think you all get the drift that I really don't like this movie.... :D

Supposedly the guy in the costume was a black guy and he said he had no problem with the role or the way it was written. However, at the time I recall being offended.

Lucas was busted for Ep IV for not having any black people so we had BDW in the ESB.

I have heard that on the internet (where everything is kept) there is a version of Ep I where some guy edited out all of the Jar Jar scenes and they movie tracks a lot better. I have not seen it.

I was utterly obliterated, and I have had some legendary benders in my day. I hear you, though. Spent most of the movie hoping someone would whip out a chalkboard and run fingernails and steak knives down it, to relieve me from the agonizing pain of listening to Jar Jar.
