C130...night landing...big hole in runway

Subject: C-130 a lesson in communication

Here's what happens when you don't properly "NOTAM" (notice to airmen)
an airfield under construction. A lack of communication over in Iraq.

Last week, one C-23 Sherpa flew into a U.S. operated airfield in Iraq
during the day and saw there was construction equipment on the runway.
Yet there was no NOTAM. A trench was being dug in the runway, and it
was not marked. It's a long runway and they just landed beyond the
construction. They filed a safety hazard report that was immediately
forwarded to our higher headquarters and to the Air Force wing based
here.

Well, it seems the construction continued and still was not marked or
NOTAM'ed or anything. A C-130 landed on the runway the night of the
29th and didn't see the construction. It wound up going through what is
now a large pit on the runway. A few pictures are attached. The C-130
was totaled.

There were several injuries to the crew and the few passengers that were
on board but luckily nobody was killed. Quite the set of failures
somewhere in the system regarding this improper construction and no
notifications about it.

Ouch, that is going to cost a pretty penny to clean up.

Some sort of Electronics Warfare version? Looks like something broke off the tail, too. Wonder where the buck's gonna stop on this one?

Damn lucky no one was hurt. I'd love to know who the construction folks were, indigs or US engineers. ???

Sorry one more, I just can't help myself:

Iceman: You two really are cowboys.
Maverick: What's your problem, Kazanski?
Iceman: You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous

Well, it looks like that the typical management "expertise" and "communication" exhibited in the American corporate world (of which I am unfortunately a part of) has finally made it to our armed forces, which is a scary thought in and of itself.

But then again, maybe this facility is being run by Halliburton, which could explain everything.

Wait...did I just cast an aspersion on Halliburton? Sounds like I'm going to be labelled as a Liberal. (Insert spit sound here.)

yup thats right. It'll buff right out. Some bondo would be good for that wing right? Im sure we can spot weld the tail back on.

I like how that piece of the nose is all crumped at the end of the hole LOL. Just ripped a big hole right in the underside.

Just like the rest of Bush's policy in Iraq. Time to deploy...out of Iraq.

#1 , no notam

#2, no markings on runway. That runway should have been CLOSED and marked with a temporary "X" or at least a displaced threshold.

#3, don't Herc's have a couple of bigass electric landing lights? Or was this a night approach using FLIR? Seems to me they may have had a chance to balloon-- given evident damage/ high airspeed
