Saw a news story saying it's -54 degrees in Minnesota today?!?

Wow!

How do cars/people/animals survive that? And WHY?

Amazing how much of a difference 1500 or so miles in the right direction can make. I think it may hit 80 here today. I'm taking a long lunch to go swimming with my son this afternoon!

The weather sucks in LA right now... I mean, it's the middle of January and I broke a sweat while eating lunch outside in the sun. Two fish tacos, a bag of tortilla chips, a Modelo Negra and sweat breaking out my brow.

Judging by the way women on the street were dressed you would think it's the middle of June! Sun dresses, skirts and sexy skimpy tops. Seeing so much skin leaves nothing for the imagination.

Did I mention that right as I started to sweat a cool light breeze blew from the west and blew my napkins away! *sigh*

I don't think I'll EVER get used to the extreme weather conditions of Southern Calif.

Cleaned my pool this morning. Darn oak leaves get in it when the wind blows. BTW did it in shorts, no shirt and flip flops. Waters too cold for me to go swimming though. Maybe I'll heat the spa for tonight.

It was raining sideways here earlier.:(

As I recall, I didn't hear any of you CA guys touting the virtues of living there over the last two weeks during the rain and mudslides!

That's a whole other story. That rain was just to create work and emphasize potholes that needed to be fixed. It was also helpful for insurance companies and lawyers who deal with personal injury and automobile accidents. But besides that I am glad to have this wonderful weather back.

Thanks guys, expect more out of staters to move to SoCal due yer irresponsible postings describing the climate...

Acutally, its terrible, overcast, grey. Everyone is unfriendly, polluted beaches, high Real Estate prices, earthquakes...did I mention Earthquakes??? Better remain out of state for now...

Today we went up to play in the snow. It was about 60˚ outside, but there was a lot of wind so it was a bit chilly. Came back to 80˚ in the valley, mid 70's near the coast.

Its ok though...its a *dry* heat.

Well people don't survive outside for very long that is for sure. I am from north dakota and lived in minneapolis where it is a bit warmer, 50 below will kill you pretty quick if you were to get stranded outside, then add the windchilll.....yee haw! Cars don't start unless you plug them in with the block heater, and even at 50 below they have a good chance of not starting. You just stay inside where it is warm :D

Big noise this morning in the tree two doors down.
I went out to check it out. There were more than 50 big Green Parrots in the tree making all kinds of noise.

My last year in Minot, ND, temp with windchill (Jan 96) was -104! How do you live? You still go to work, school, shop...you just dress for the weather, get the car warmed up, etc. The key is you've got to be prepared to survive in the cold if "something" happens. I remember 2-3 people died each winter from exposure. Have to say though (with apologies to our northern neighbors) that I've crossed the upper midwest off my retirement list.

I just spent a miserable 2 weeks in Minnesota, I was sick w/ a flu that i could not shake, (the kind where you shiver in 80deg. weather, but it was -10 below outside, good times....), it can be beautiful there when it snows but this time it was just cold, brown and awful. Freezing rain had left the ground feeling like ball bearings w/ Slick 50 added in places, I lasted less than 24 hours before my head bounced off the concrete. I'd wait around all day until it was time to go to the club and sit in a sauna w/ a bunch of hairy old dudes sniffling and blowing their noses. God, I love that place. :rolleyes:

It's freakishly beautiful in SoCal right now the way only a major storm can cause, everything washed clean and visibilty that seems like 1000 miles. I swear that you can read a street sign from 2 blocks away. 80 degrees outside, warm sun on the skin w/ no bugs or humidity and a slight breeze. And that's downtown, not the beach. Even when it was raining it was paradise compared to the midwest, but then I don't live where mudslides affect me. (5th floor of a 1929 Deco building in the center city). :cool:

Here in MN: Current conditions: 11 degrees w/ - 1 windchill factor. It is hard to shake the "freezing" feeling and you can't get inside fast enough!! But, I do like living in MN & having all 4 four seasons.

I was just in "SoCal" Dana Point for a few days visiting an uncle and it was about 58 degrees...felt pretty nice to me. He kept saying "don't you want a coat"....and I said it was 10 degrees when we left MN so this feels pretty warm to me. :)

Noah, Wasn't Coolidge the one who gave the long-winded inaugural speech, (1.5 hrs.?), out in the biting cold and then promptly caught pneumonia and croaked?? :D

I could be thinking of someone else, but I thought that it was him. Then when he died, some smartass writer asked, "how can they tell?" :p

Minus 50??? It almost eighty degrees warmer in my refrigerator freezer!!
