[OT] Landrover probs..anyone know...
1996 Landrover discovery
Was driving from philly to charlotte...(all this in 2 minutes time while pulling over to shut down. ) Valve chatter got loud..oil light came on..check engine came on.. ran rough....I checked oil....Full... ( i added a quart anyhow..oil light went off...chekc engine still on...still running bad) Any ideas...stuck in Baltimore..... Oil pump??? |
Oh dear! Not the correct forum for this..... assuming you have a V8 and not a TDI sounds like you have lost oil presssure which could be drive to oil pump or oil relief valve stuck open. Neither are easy to work on at the roadside but you can do it.

I used to have same truck (loved it) and these people will help you. Not like PP people but will help nonetheless. joe 68 L |
Don't have any first-hand experience with this, but Land Rovers apparently have a sludge build up problem in the oil pan. Could be yours has reached critical mass.
|
Sounds like oil pump or bearings. Join the club, my 1999
has had the engine rebuilt 3 times in 100k miles. nice trucks when they run, but let's face it, they really s*ck. burn it. |
You LR had the lowest CSI rating of any vehicle at that time. Ooops.

Yeah, we bought ours in 2001, and within a year the values dropped to half of what we paid for ours. It's been a love-hate relationship the whole way. Mechanical problems, RUST, absolutely no support from LRNA, and very little from the dealer. Never again. It's too bad, when everything is running right, it's a wonderful vehicle. |

Same thing I said about my first car......a 1976 Fiat X1/9:p |
My shop is located in Fairfax Va. about 20 mins from the DC area. We are only one of about four independent shops that will work on these. No offense to LR owners but they are designed and built very poorly by todays SUV standards. AND they are one of the most expensive to buy new!!
The only reccomendation I make to LR owners is to sell it quickly!! The 'average' $$ repair at our shop runs about $2200. |
The only people who ever buy LRs appear to be people who don't do any research before they buy a vehicle.
|
5th gear (UK TV mag) did a lane change test with one of the 1990s LRs.......sucker tipped over in a heartbeat.
|
I think most are suckered in by the 'promiss' of a really durable SUV and of course, the name.
I think LR is the Ferrari of the SUV world!! |
Mambodave, definitely sounds like oil pump. I recal that if the check engine light is on then it's not critical, if it's flashing then stop engine immediately. If no more bad sounds then you should be safe driving directly to a dealer/shop. LR dealers here bend over backwards to help when your truck is in warranty but once the honeymoon is over the gloves come off.
Lots of harsh comments from everyone. Don't get me wrong I was happy to see our 99 DII go, but like david914 said, they are terrific when running right. Contrary to what 350HP said I did a good 6 months research on the LRs before I committed. Found that post 96 the Disco reliability got more respectable, with 94-96 being the worst years. Nearly every Disco owner I ran into said they loved the truck. And upholding LR tradition they have a very heavy duty chassis and do extremely well off road. As already noted resale is enough to make you cry. |
As a side note my wife now drives a 03 Ford Expedition. It's the EB version with all the features. This thing is obviously light years ahead of the Disco in quality, gets 4-5 MPG better average, way way way more power and room. So we're driving home the other night and my wife says how much she misses the Disco. I have to admit, the Disco has personality and character. The Expedition can never compete on that level.
|
Well...the good thing is thats its uder warranty (extended warranty covers this)
So other than being inconvienent...not a big deal. |
Good point - the disco does have personality, and that does count for quite a bit. I got tired of the 'new' personality of my Fiat X1/9 (blown hoses, under dash fire, etc) and sold it. It was completely trouble free for 3 years, then the stuff started going kaput -

Give discoweb.org a try, lots of knowledge there.
Have had our '99 Disco Series II since Aug. '99, very few problems and it sees a fair amount of dirt. |
I've driven them on the road (never off road) and I don't see what's so wonderful about them even when they are running right.
Seemed to me to just be a sluggish, top heavy, slow, gas guzzling (how can something that slow use that much gas?!?) thing to me. I hear they are good off road, though. To bad no one ever takes them off road (well, at least 99% of people 99% of the time). |
I disagree. I really liked it and found it to be as stable on the road/highway as my a6 wagon I drive now. The gas situation I don't really remember as I had it from 96-99 and I don't remember gas being as pricey and/or me worried about it (I am now, almost $40 a fill up...ouch!). For me it wasn't so much the offroading, which we only did a few times while camping but also the towing ability on that thing. It was incredible. We were once towing motorcycles and I literally forgot they were there. The handling was so unaffected that I just spaced and took a corner too fast (needed a new clutch lever on my virago after that).
Cons: If you're over 6 feet you are BUMMING. Seat doesn't accomodate anyone taller, it just doesn't go back any further. Rust, the hinges and tailgate rust easily. Replaced on extended warranty but PITA to go and have it done etc. anyway, just my 2 cents. I liked it. joe 68 L |

I mean common how many H2's can even fit on a dirt road? I for one have a D-90 that has spent a lot of time off road. It has had problems, but mostly small attention to details problems. Great off road, but nagging problems definetly get old. And it has held its value probably as well as a 911 would have. I can still break even if I sold it today. |
