airfare refunds for flying to funerals?
is this a real thing? ive heard of it, but do airlines actually offer discounts for this sort of thing?
i need to fly to upstate new york to attend my grandfather's funeral (RIP ) i hate to gripe about spending money for something as important as this but i could be spending almost a whole month's pay for this. thanks in advance

My condolences.
My freind has done this although for him to go to Florida it was still cheaper to get a seat sale online. You have to call the airline and provide them with a death cert up front and they discount a percentage off of their regular fare. Hope this helps Mike

We did this last year for my wife's Dad via American. We paid the full price up front and then gave them the information from the Funeral Home and they discounted it after - I don't recall the amount of the discount.

You can find a better deal on the internet or by talking to a supervisor at the airline (in booking or reservations) and getting a "one week" or "one month" fare....

Sorry to hear about your loss. I had a funeral in the family several months ago. Needed to fly out to Minnesota at the last minute. Northwest was very helpful with my situation. Full price tickets would have been $1200 rountrip; discounted fare was $320. I did have to travel at different times than I would have preferred, but that was to be expected. NWA needed the name of the deceased, address of the funeral home and phone number.

I went through this last summer, we got a whopping $20 off the round trip fare.

Sorry about your loss - just came back from a funeral. The AA fare was $500 to Hartford or RI with the Berievement (sp) rate normally was over $1000 for such short notice. We ended up burning some miles on the frequent flyers. Your in DFW? Are you in the Maverick Chap of PCA?
