iPod help!

For some reason, when I hook up my iPod to my computer now, the computer won't update the songs on the iPod.

It's like iTunes doesn't recognize that the iPod has been connected. But the connection seems fine, because it causes the iPod to light up and begin charging.

Any ideas?

reboot? rebuild permissions?

Reboot? If by that you mean restart the computer, did that.

Rebuild permissions? I have no idea what that means!

I am sure that somebody here will have the answer, but in the meantime, checkout ipodlounge.com .

Thanks guys.

I checked the ipodlounge link you gave me, Neil. Went to forums, and lo and behold, on the first page there is a long tread addressing this very issue:

Seems like a lot of people are having this problem. I did a "reset" like a lot of them suggested, and fortunately, it worked! Although I'm a little concerned that this seems to be a problem with the iPod that resetting doesn't always fix . . . .

When you connected your iPod, did it show up on iTunes? If not, a reboot was the only way to fix it. Is it an HP iPod? My 3rd gen iPod does not have this problem and neither does my son's 4th gen Apple iPod. However, my wife's 4th gen HP iPod does. I don't know if this is inherent with HP iPods though.

No, didn't show up on iTunes. I think mine is a 20GB model with only the wheel on it (no separate buttons above the wheel like the older ones), about a month old, so I'd imagine it is the current generation, whatever that is. I don't know what an "HP" iPod is.

Brian,

Repairing permissions is something that as an OSX user, you should do about once a month. Go into your Utilities folder and locate the Hard Disk Utilities app. Launch it and you will see how to repair permissions. Make sure your data is backed up first, though.

Brian:
Bring up iTunes without plugging in the iPod, and there are preferences that you can set, such as 'automatically update my iPod with new songs.'

Perhaps those types of settings got messed up.
