Ok, I know there's a scam here - where is it?

I have a yahoo personals account. I checked it today out of boredom, and had this message

Hello,
My name is Elena, me of 29 years.
I liked your profile on a site and I at once have decided to write to you the letter.
I very much liked yours the image and in the following letter I shall send you the image, I hope, that I liking to you also
am strong, as you to me!!!
With impatience I shall wait for your letter!!!!
Please write the letters on mine e-mail: lena_sergeeva@inbox.ru
Sincerely Elena.

I've had several of these over the past couple years, they're all very similar. I've never followed the rabbit down the hole to see where it would go. Any hints on flushing them out? Motion, is this how you found your honey?

jbripps 02-02-2005 12:58 PM

well.....where is that "image".......

legion 02-02-2005 01:11 PM

Probably just fishing for some lonely guy to bilk out of cash.

gaijindabe 02-02-2005 01:13 PM

Cash runs out. A greencard is forever!

ronin 02-02-2005 01:16 PM

exactly!!

RickM 02-02-2005 01:23 PM

Well the email is registered to a Yahoo-like portal with a personals section. Ya never know if this is legitimate or not.

My rule for anything internet is that if I can't trust people who are relatively close geographically I'll be damned if I'm reaching out farther.

Wasn't Richard's current squeeze here already when they met?

Seems a little bogus but definitely someone from another country. My opinion is if the basic stuff doesn't add up then I wouldn't mess with it. But send an email and see if you get a response - worst case scenario you can block the email account in the future.

Personally I think to even joke about something like this is in very poor taste and has NO place on this board.

Until I sorted my firewall etc properly I used to get hit with this type of thing. They usually lead to an internet pay for porn site or similar.

There was a period about a year ago that I was being bombarded by MSN messenger for everything from carpet sales to the plate of the day at a fairly local restaurant.

Evans, Marv 02-02-2005 01:57 PM

Does the "ru" at the end of the email address mean Russia????

Hmmm, tough one.

I kind of liken this board to an amusement park. All of the attendees are here because we share an interest in thrill rides. But for the most part that's where it ends.

I need to be prepared to see an overwheight woman in spandex shorts, hear "colorful" speech while meandering through the crowd, endure smokers, be subject to people chewing their food like cows in the food court, stand downwind of the guy who has never heard of deoderent on a 95 degree day, etc....etc....

All of these things offend me but if I want to enjoy the rides then sometimes, unfortunately, I need to tolerate my fellow man. It's part of the price of admission.

Not saying don't speak your mind but I doubt socal meant to offend anyone.

Afterall that is an urban legend is it not?

Scott

I believe I heard recently that they can now somehow attach a virus to a JPEG image.

Personally, I just delete those types of messages.

Let me tell you about the alligators that live in the sewers next . . .

Actually I was just killing time waiting for some paint to dry by poking fun at a post I made in another thread that someone took offense to. Although I'm sure if you were David Crosby you wouldn't find quite the same level of humor as others might.

I wasn't joking about killing anybody. And besides I had an airtight alibi.

Best policy.

Some of my clients now automatically delete any electronic communication when they don't recognise the sender.
