Any good NEW music?

When I get really bored or am highly medicated I tend to order things off the internet for no reason whatsoever. Apparently last night I took some Tylenol Cold & Sinus and woke up with a receipt in my mailbox for a 20 gig iPod. I've been meaning to buy one, but just couldn't talk myslef into it... until last night.

Sooo... I'm looking for some good new music to buy off of iTunes. I already have all of the classics and whatnot, I'm looking for new creative music from the last couple of years... preferably from bands that are kindof rare or undiscovered, but not the typical poppy crap you hear on the radio.

I just bought the Shins and love it, the Strokes are good, some Deathcab for Cutie... stuff kindof in that genre.

Any ideas?

Death Cab for Cutie is like an indie/pop so you might like The Ataris, Homegrown, Taking back Sunday, Thursday. They are more Pop Punk. Some bands that I listen to are a little harder. They are considered screamo or hardcore but not that goth crap. Some bands I listen to are: Underoath, Thrice, From Autumn to Ashes, Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, Norma Jeane, Poison the Well, The Bled. Maybe I'm just way off from the kind of music you listen to but I hope this helps.

Also if you want to preview the bands first you can go to purevolume.com and type in the bands name. They have sample songs and whatnot.

Maroon 5 seems to be pretty hot right now, very good stuff. Maybe too mainstream for you. More obscure but excellent bands are, Travis, Morcheeba, and Rooney. I'll chime in again when I think of some more.

My two cents.

The Postal Service are fantastic if you are into DCFC, best thing I have heard in years. Also try Broken Social Scene (sounds a lot weirder than it is).

Eric Johnson is good. I liked some Jet songs. I've seen Mark Erelli in concert, sort of a a folkish country "rock" sound. I hate to really say country b/c people have a prejudice (myself included) with the word, but if you're feeling adventurous his CD is good, probably more new folk. Perhaps look up some bands on Amazon or other sites, they have recommendations and what other people also buy.

EDIT: I should have added, www.markerelli.com

One way I've found a lot of new music on iTunes is to scan their playlists. For instance, go to Alternative Music. There's a box at the lower left corner with 'Celebrity Playlists' - basically a bunch of different musicians put together their own playlists. I scan thru this sort of stuff and have come up with some really good obscure tunes. I'm sure you know, but you can just click on any song and hear a 20-30 second preview.

Some of the stuff in my library:

Lots of DCFC
Postal Service
Copeland
Early November
Sleeping at Last
Senses Fail
Snow Patrol
A Perfect Circle
Juliana Theory
Wilco

Some FOX shows like the OC have awesome soundtracks too, look for music from that show. You won't be dissapointed.

Here's one more, if you like the female singer.

Butterfly Boucher

She's awesome, very talented chick. Writes all the music and plays every instrument on her album. She's only got one out there.

Have fun,
