Valentine's Day

What is everyone doing for Valentine's day?
My husband has just been told he has to be in London so I've organised the weekend in London for us around it. Theatre Friday and Saturday evening. Portobello Market Saturday morning. Harrods and Harvey Nics in the afternoon, Sunday in Covent Garden. Monday: me, a creditcard and the west end of London during the day and a romantic restaurant for two in the evening.

I've been giving my wife valentine's gifts since February 1st. Just little gifts - chocolates, stuffed animals, flowers...etc. This year I'm doing the '14 days of Valentines' theme.

It's fun to see her reactions and the smile it puts on her face!

Yeah, I'm a sap.

Maybe I'll do the dishes and clean the house - she likes it better than flowers or candy.

OK ISABO help me out - my wife doen't care for flowers, doesn't want candy (she's trying to shed a few pounds and they will end up being eatin by the curtain climbers - you don't want them on sugar!), she is not big into jewelry or parfume. We have gone on "date nights" but end up wondering what the kids are doing. Any ideas?

I think I'll drive her to the local WAL-MART, and tell her she can have anything she wants, then hand her a WHOLE TWENTY DOLLAR BILL! If she's smart, she'll buy 5 quarts of Mobil one 15-50. A dab of that behind her ears, and I go absolutely wild! I mean, for 4 or 5 minutes, even!

Any hobbies or collections? You could try feeding those with an item she wants but doesn't want to spend on just now: Unless she's a serious artist in the kitchen, DO NOT buy kitchen appliances!
In fact, buy absolutely nothing that is practical or sensible. How about a Hermes silk scarf, a Halcyon Days enamel box, or something in cashemere?

From past experience:

DO's
1> dont forget to say I love you at least a gazillion times
2> cards
3> candy
4> roses
5> little love notes hidden around the house
6> make her breakfast/ bring her a cup of tea in bed, on a tray with a flower
7> candlit dinner either at a really nice romantic restaurant
8> OR make her a nice dinner at home
9> do something spontanious and romantic
10> give her your credit card and say "spend it all honey"

funnily enough I can only think of 2 DONTs !

DONT
1> dont buy her underwear unless you know her size and her taste, most women dont like trashy underwear !
2> inisist on a BJ, because thats the only time in the year your likly to get oneh

I'm sending my ex some roses. So I shall be spending the day avoiding hitmen and professional legbreakers.

Isabo et al: I am going to make this tough. My wife is an amazing women. She grew up on a large farm in a small town in Iowa. She is very "careful" with money. She will only buy things for herself after the needs of the house and kids are met and then they are typically well thought out. She likes nice things but also wants to save for a few big ticket items that are a bit off in the future. She really should be a CFO some place.

She doesn't collect anything and is not into fancy stuff per se - scarfs are out, enamal boxes- she has a few and complains that they are in the way but doesn't want to store them becuase of sentimental value. She is a very picky eater and not a real artist in the kitchen - pot roasts and quasadillas are her specialties.

DO's
1> dont forget to say I love you at least a gazillion times - WE SAY THIS TO EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME ANYWAY
2> cards - I ACTUALLY HAVE MADE HER CARDS, THAT GOES OVER WELL BUT IT ISN'T UNIQUE ANYMORE
3> candy - NOPE - KIDS WOULD END UP EATING IT (we don't want that!)
4> roses - SHES NOTE A BIG FLOWER FAN, SHE LIKES THEM BUT HER PRATICLE SIDE WINS MORE THEN NOT. I HAVE PICKED HER WILD FLOWERS AND GIVEN THEM TO HER FOR NO REAL REASON OTHER THAN I LOVE HER AND THAT HAS PROVIDED VERY VERY INTERESTING PHYSICAL GYMNASTICS - DON'T WANT TO DILUTE THAT ACE IN THE HOLE SO TO SPEAK!
5> little love notes hidden around the house - DONE WEEKLY ANYWAY, I ALSO WRITE HER POEMS AND LOVE LETTERS, THEY GET THE JOB DONE FOR SURE!
6> make her breakfast/ bring her a cup of tea in bed, on a tray with a flower - SHE DOESN'T REALLY EAT BREAKFAST AND HOTS HOT BEVERAGES. EATING IN BED IS A PET PEEVE OF HERS, NOT A BIG FAN OF IT
7> candlit dinner either at a really nice romantic restaurant - WE DO THAT FROM TIME TO TIME AND WE ALWAYS END UP WONDERING ABOUT THE KIDS, WE START MISSING THEM.
8> OR make her a nice dinner at home - i DO 50% OF THE COOKING NOW, WOULD MIND 100%, THING IS, SHE DOES'NT PLACE A WHOLE LOT OF VALUE ON A GREAT MEAL.
9> do something spontanious and romantic - OK, THAT S PRETTY OPEN ENDED. SHE WILL EXPERIEMENT FROM TIME TO TIME BUT SHE HAS NEVER REALLY BEEN INTO ANY OF THE ROMANCE STUFF. SHE WILL TELL YOU, I AM FAR MORE ROMANTIC THEN SHE IS.
10> give her your credit card and say "spend it all honey" - NOPE, SHE IS REALLY AGAINST DEBT AND DOESN'T LIKE CCs AT ALL

So, all in all, I would say that this V day will be like the last few - I will get the kids to handmake a card, maybe get them to a neighbors to play for a few hours and let her have time for herself to take a nap or watch a game on the tube. She is a huge football fan, NASCAR and getting to be a big NCAA hoops fan. I may even burn her a few Tim McGraw CDs - she loves him.

Here's what I'll do....aside from the court thing.

Purchase a gift certificate for her favorite spa to get a massage, facial and/or mani/pedi-cure. Then a basket filled with bath/candle type stuff. Lastly, dinner with her and my daughter.

Any or all of these are sure fire winners.

FWIW, the basket will be relatively inexpensive. I'll use one of the many from business gifts or other basket I've received over the years. Then I can personalize the contents. Card, flowers, candles, bath cushion....etc. Looks like a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond and a couple of those chick botiques at lunch.

A card, and dinner the following week... which is what she asked for.

She's not a bling-bling bimbo, nor is she a fashion plate; and she appreciates the ridiculous contrivance that V-day is. The best part is, she works occasionally at a jewelers and believes (as I do) that jewelry is a colossal waste of money ... most especially diamonds.

She also appreciates how stupid it is for everyone to go out for dinner on one night and expect that any restaurant can provide good food/service.

We were out the other day shopping, and the store had a large V-Day card aisle. I said, softly and earnestly, "baby, why don't you go pick out a card that you like and I'll buy it for you." Yeah, I was serious.

I'll make her pick the restaurant.
