There is no way in hell I'd pay $645 to get my cats teeth cleaned. I've got relatives in Oklahoma gummin' thier food right now. They're doing just fine.

In my next life I plan to be an equine opthamologist.
Don't even get me started.

$625 at Tiffanys. Let her choose. (I'm guessing the cat will be toothless).

I have paid 375 cdn for this procedure - the anesthetic was the expensive part. Could you get a second opinion?

Cliff, My oldest cat had this done a few years ago. I know it was under $200. They gave her anesthetic, removed 3 teeth, and cleaned the rest. Bring the cat up here, have my vet do it, and we can hang out in my shop while you wait.

![]() There's a huge difference in what the surgeon bills for the Sx, and the 'out the door' cost of the procedure. In the case of the feline oral Sx, that would be an 'out the door' cost. . . . which may be on the high side. There are, after-all still some Vet's who will use cheap (unmonitored) anesthetic, yank whatever looks bad, and gamble that the cat makes it out alive. hmmm, seems there might be something to the idea that you get what you pay for.

Just go down to the local ricer shop, buy a bottle of NOS, some hose and a funnel and do it yourself. There's got to be a DIY article about it somewhere here on Pelican.

GET PET INSURANCE.
Available through most vets and saves a ton on bills. The dog blew her ACL, she was only 4 or 5 at the time so putting her down was out of the question. $3k to get a TPLO, tibial plateu leveling. http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/tplo.htm really cool procedure. Doc says it's due to the angle that the knee joint meets and if they blow one they are pretty much gauranteed to blow the other. So we got pet insurance and sure enough almost a year to the day she blows out the other leg. Insurance covered almost all of it. Amazing what they can do today. Watching her run around you'd never know her rear end is held together with metal plates and pins. They even reimburse partially for check ups and vaccinations. Scott ![]() ![]()

I've never had the opportunity to work on dogs yet. (Just some pretty bad looking women occasionally).

ok, thanks for the laughs!
second estimate went even higher. makaio, your suggestions sounds kickass, but the damn cat hates the travel box. this last time, it dove into the clean laundry for safety. we ambushed her there and wrestled her into the pet carrier. on the drive to the vet, she decided to pee. so i now have a catpee scented air freshener in my truck. we went into the vets office with a juicy cat. when we pulled her out, damp with urine, we noticed that the animal clawed a pair of black panties into the box with her. they were soaked with urine. the vet was amused, and my girlfriend was mortified. i chuckled, until i got urine cleaning duty. no way, the cat will make such a long drive. thanks tho. looks like my harvey wiedman money is evaporating ![]()

It would be cheaper to bring the cat to your dentist for the same procedure.
Vet costs are out of control. Brought my dog for a routine check a couple of years ago. Turns out he gets kennel cough. Call vet back stating thet it was contracted at her office and she said "oh well, can't prescribe anything over the phone. Need to come back in". Yeah right. A quick google brought up a remedy that worked peerfectly.....cost: $3.00 (Childs cough supressent w/o expectorant).

you hear that noise? that is the sound of my fun money evaporating. cat is now being worked on. we went for it. it seemed the responsible thing to do. my girlfriend says that the cat is her's, so should be the re$pon$ibilty. but believe me, it will come from me at another level. the cat is a good cat, i have no vermin.

Is it because cats are small that they should cost less? Vet's have the same time & cost commitment, for their schooling. They have to learn about a lot more than ONE speicies (unlike human doc's). They can't just ask the patient "what's wrong". At any time a Vet's patient may try to take-out a chunk of the doc's face. From what I've seen, Vet's do NOT go in to the profession chasing big money/power . . .. unlike the majority of human doc's. btw, funny timing of this thread. I took my Mom's cat to the Vet yesterday. It had wounds from a nasty fight. The Vet anesthetized the cat, fixed the wounds. . . and then suggested yanking a few bad teeth, and cleaning the rest. From this thread, I was expecting $600+ . . . the bill was less than $300. What would the cost be of some guy going to the emergency-room, after a bar-fight, to get stiched-up . .. and then head to the dentist to get his wisdom teeth pulled?
