San Diego Job Market
Hello,
My girlfriend is moving to San Diego and I'm thinking about going with her but I was wondering what the job market out there is like? I read the thread on housing costs being just this side of ludicris (sp?) so that means we'll each sleep in one of my cars - hahhaa but seriously, What are the job prospects for a college grad with with fin. serv. exp? Thanks...

San Diego's economy is primarily tourist and service-based.
There are a few large universities, a few telecom/electronics companies, and some biotech firms if your skills would apply in any of those fields. SD was historically a big Navy town and had a huge aerospace/defense presence until the early 90's. Housing is not quite as insane as SF/LA/OC but still extremely costly anywhere along the coast. Inland, it's much more reasonable.

The unemployment rate in S.D. is currently either 3.4% or 3.7%. I would think you wouldn't have too much of a problem finding a pretty decent job - especially with a degree & experience. The housing market is another story. You can buy a normal house if you have $500K to $700K to spend. You might be better off to rent for now, since a lot of people are saying the housing market is overheated & due for a correction pretty soon. May turn out not to be true, but it's plain crazy right now.

Great advice guys.
What do think it would cost to rent a place not along the coast? Would that include parking? What would be a solid, respectable place to start looking? Thanks again guys! I'm going to go work on my bartending skills...just in time for football - heheheheee. We're (if I do go) not going until the first week of April...what's going on out there around that time? Here in New England we're just coming out of hibernation - hahahaaa.

If you do come out bring your Porsche.
The SDR PCA is very active. http://www.pcasdr.org/home/index.html I would think you could rent a nicer 1 bdrm apt with in 10 minutes of the beach for $1400+or- a month? I'd rent close to where you work. We have traffic too. I-5 and I-15 are very busy, southbound in the mornings and northbound in the afternoons. I like most the beach areas from Downtown San Diego north to San Clemente, the northern areas being my favorite. I live 15 minutes east of downtown, several nice locations inland as well. Get a little more for your rent money too. |

Send me a PM - I could use a bartender with a passion for cars in SD. The job is interesting - you would be trained well in understanding how to improve reliability in mfg equip and heavy equip. Not much of any travel. If your interested in helping people make there stuff run better and providing some value (as well as make good chink) let me know.
