Regisitering a Web Address
Anyone have any good advice about dealing with any of the many companies out there that register Domain names (???????.com)? Things to look out for? Good companies to deal with? etc.
Thanks! ![]()

Thanks '84, I saw them, as well as 1000's of other places. Some of them was advertising prices down to $8.95 per year or less! I'm just looking to register a web name, I already have space through my internet provider (Comcast). I know that lots of people have done this before I have, so I figured before I stumble into the worst of the bunch, that I'd ask around and try to avoid the BTDT situations.

I used dyndns.org's free second level domain service for years (id10t.dyndns.org) and when I bought my gruv.org domain I did it thru them as a payback for years of excellent free service. So now my domain registration is thru them, and they provide my primary dns as well. I actually run the server off my DSL line at home on a 400mhz G3 iMac.
Also, my boss just got done with a few domains, and he didn't want to host them himself. He went with 1and1.com - lots of good reviews, decent price, etc.

I like godaddy.com. (Even before their Superbowl commercial!) They are around $8 per domain name. I have four of my five domain names with them, and have been very happy. One I would reccomend to stay away from is network solutions. (if they are even still in business) I have heard VERY bad things about them. Do a search on network solutions and you will find tons of horror stories.
Are you going to be running a web server, or just owning the domain name??? If you're running a web server, you have to know your DNS nameservers before you buy the name so that you can tell the registrar their addresses. That is what "points" the traffic to where your website is being hosted. If you are just wanting to buy a domain name (such as yourname.com) and use your ISP to host the site, you will probably need to find a registrar that provides a redirecting service. Most ISPs will not host a domain name you buy. They will let you host a website under their name (such as yourname.yourisp.com). Your ISP could be different, but I haven't seen a residential ISP service that allows that.

My only personal experience from Network Solutions is from when my uncle wanted to transfer the domain name he bought from them to my server. For starters, it turned out that he didn't own the domain name that he "bought" from them. He was more or less leasing it from them. They didn't tell him that when he "bought" it. The only way he was able to get them to agree to transfer the domain name was for him to pay a $200 "transfer fee". If you look around, most registrars charge $10 to $20 to do a transfer. I just transfered one of my domains to godaddy for $7.95.
Here are a few websites I found after a quick search: http://directory.google.com/Top/Society/Issues/Business/Allegedly_Unethical_Firms/Verisign/ http://www.webpagepublicity.com/software-reviews.html http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op/xml/01/04/02/010402opfoster.html http://news.com.com/2010-1071-281311.html?legacy=cnet I don't know why I though they might be out of business. Probably because they merged with VeriSign a few years ago. Didn't mean to offend or anything, that's just my experience.

No offense at all. And Many Thanks for the links. It was just that in my 10 years as an independent SE, neither myself or our clients have had any problems with them.

About "parking" the domain - dyndns offers a offline redirect or all requests redirect to any single web page, even with the free *.dyndns.org domains.

I know a couple of people that have used http://www.brinkster.com/ They said they had excellent customer service and you could call them up to get help designing your webpage whenever you want.
