There are early 90's turbo Volvo wagons out there with a stick. One of my son's girl friends drives one. They go like stink.
As for early Toyota's, whether trucks or 4runners, they have similar issues. AT does not last, and wiring is deficient. My daughter had a 1990 4 runner. The rh mirror would not work. I traced the problem to broken wires in the bundle that past through the A pillar into the driver door where the controls were on the armrest. I had to patch in 6 new wires. Also had a stating problem that no one could fix. New Toyota starters, and dealer could never fix. I had to put a simple pushbutton bypass switch to the starter. It was just like driving my 1960's MGA again which had a pull knob to engage the starter. Replaced the AT, $4k, and then could not stop a leak, and then the transfer case had a problem. Sold it to a Toyota mechanic and bought my daughter a new Suabru Forester the same day. Also, the Toyotas are really underpowered. My son has a 94 4x4 with a V6 and it is a dog. And as for Saabs, you ever hear of the old line " No, not another saab (sob) story". Goes with FIAT-"fix it again, tony" good luck |
Steve? You're saying the automatic on the Toyota pickemups is not so good? That's why we're thinking of dumping a '99 Ranger. Please clue.

Check to be sure that Toyota still manufactures a rebuilt transmission for the model you intend to buy.
Her AT on her 1990 4Runner crapped out in San Diego, 2 hrs from her home. Had no choice but get it replaced, except Toyota did not manufacture any rebuilds for it. Sort of like my 92 C2 tiptronic which is a throwaway transmission from Porsche. They do not make rebuilds, so you'll have to find one from a demo yard. Well, there was a local guy who rebuilt it for the dealer in San Diego. Worked okay except they did not replace the kick down cable which was shot. I had to do that when she brought the car home to San Jose. Well after replacing the cable, I had to reseal the pan. Toyota has no gasket but uses an RTV like sealant. So I did that. Seems okay for a day so she drives back down to LA. Seal leaks profusely on the way, so she stops in Bakersfield for repair at Toyota dealer. They "fixed" it. Drives down to LA to her home. Oops, still leaking. Takes it to her local dealer for repair. Oops, besides the leak, there is a problem with transfer case which somehow is affecting the ability to properly seal the pan. Well, that's when I flew down and got rid of it and bought the Subaru for her. Maybe I should not generalize for all Toyota ATs but I sure was disappointed in this one. |
