non-OEM extended warranties?

Any advice out there on the extended warranty options out there? I'm interested in getting a 540 with 20k left on the BMW factory warranty but wondering if the non-BMW 4 years/up to 100k warranties that I've seen are worth it? I'm curious if anyone has used them and how easily the "claim" was handled since it is not related to the factory.

I did but all the opinions were just that. I guess I'm used to technical posts and answers that can be factual. I'll be like every other slob out there and hope that if something is fatally flawed it shows up in the next 20k miles, and go out-of-pocket after that for repairs.

My brother bought a 1998 525i with the certified pre owned warranty up to 100k. It only covers certain things and the work has to be done by authorized BMW repair center aka dealer. Make sure you read the agreement carefully to find out what is covered and what isn't. I purchased the VW one for my car up to 100k and on the agreement, it states comprehensive which covers almost everything. Also find yourself a good mechanic in advance and have the car looked over from top to bottom. BMWs are wonderful cars and they will last a long time assuming they have properly maintained.

For that car, yes - you'll more than likely need it.

Soon.

When I first bought the 951, I also purchased an extended warranty from "preferred". It was well worth the investment, since for 250.00 up-front and then my 150 deductable, I was able to get the following performed within 1,000 miles of purchase--all rod bearings, re-sealed the front end, water pump, (not the belts themselves though) although all labor was re-imbursed, wheel bearings, and oil pan gasket. Not bad for 400.00 parts and labor. The warranty company didn't question a thing, I just had to call them up-front and was even able to use a mechanic of my choosing. They paid the shop direct. It was a pretty sweet deal.

I too have "preferred" on my a6 and I haven't broken even "yet" but I'm close. $1500 for 2 years 24K miles. Had water pump and tensioner, belts, window motor and a few other odds and ends all repaired at dealer w/no problems. I was reeeeeeal close to getting a 540 as well but when I went to get the warranty it was a lot more due to v-8 among other things. The more I read the more I got scared of the 540 (i was looking at pre-97, nikasil issues, etc). Anyway, I'm happy with preferred warrantys (yes that's how they spell it).
