strange fruit, southern man, sweet home alabama

Anybody else a little disturbed by the Grammy appearance of Lynyrd Skynrd and their singing of "Sweet Home Alabama".

It seems to me that Young's "Southern Man" was a rock and roll follow up of "Strange Fruit". And that "Sweet Home Alabama" is just a "mind your own business, America love it or leave it " type response.

Think it was cooler that a web-distributed album won a grammy...

Two things for me. Now I know J-Lo and Tim Magraw can't sing, period since all performances were live. I do think the Grammy's were the best overall in years though

Did anyone watch the grammys? Ratings wise, it came in 2nd place to the over-heated housewifes on ABC, and 3rd in many markets..

The real news of this hyped-up non-event is that it is watched by less and less people every year. Throwing in a little Skynrd to attract some Red-State viewers? Sorry, it didn't work.

Nothing on network TV can disturb me, not that is shouldn't. But I wont let them..

Just MHO, but I don't have any interest in watching celebrities tell each other how great they believe they are; Grammys, Oscars, Tonys... whatever. What other "institutions'" self-love-ins would you watch? Pipefitter of the Year awards? Jewellers' Industry Award Gala?

Pffft.

But then I believe that readers of People magazine and similar periodicals should be sterilized. Rant over; now back to your regularly scheduled TV-induced menticide.

Strange Fruit by DAVID MARGOLICK

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
And the sudden smell of burning flesh!

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Or am I trying to get too deep here.

Green Day did tear the place up, but isn't that guy's guitar strap a little too long?

Mellissa Etheridge is stranger than ever - either that or Captain Pickard is singing Janis Joplin tunes now. And that barefoot girl in the duet was awesome!

Tim Mcgraw was very disappointing. Either he had an off (key) night or he is the product of studio producing - although his concerts are always sold out. I guess if you're married to Faith Hill, you can hit a sour note every now and then and still have a great life.

You're kidding, right?

Marilyn Manson and Eminem are mainstream, but "Sweet Home Alabama" makes you uneasy?

I didn't watch..."Arrested Development" was on...

I'm guessing that Franz Ferdinand didn't win anything, let alone get nominated, despite being the best new album I bought last year.

no, not kiddding. Civil Rights has always been an issue for me.

I would not know a Marilyn Manson or Eminem song. Just shows my age, I guess. I'll go find out what they sing about.

Well, I read several of Eminem's lyrics. Vulgar, angry, self serving. Never could be mainstream and never on the radio stations I have ever listened to. You'd have to choose to listen to his stuff. And what social issue is being addressed? I have no clue.

As a "tribute" to southern rock Sweet Home Alabama was a poor choice. It's basically a song defending the south from an attack on it's heritage.

Considering the people on stage at the time, and that the sentiment was to pay homage to southern rock I think that the Charlie Daniels Band, South's Gonna Do it (Again) would have been more appropriate.

"Well the train to Grinder's Switch is runnin' right on time
And the Tucker boys are cookin' down in Caroline
People down in Florida can't be still
When old Lynyrd Skynyrd's pickin' down in Jacksonville
People down in Georgia come from near and far
To hear Richard Betts pickin' on his red guitar

Chorus:
So gather round gather round children
Get down well just get down children
Get loud well you can be loud and be proud
And you can be proud here
Be proud to a rebel 'cause the south's gonna do it again

Elvin Bishop's sittin' on a bale of hay
He ain't good lookin' but he sure can play
And there's ZZ Top and you can't forget
That old brother Willie's gettin' soakin' wet
And all the good people down in Tennessee
Are diggin' barefoot Jerry and the CDB"

Melissa has guts, gotta respect her.

Green Day rocked. If you've never seen them live you have no idea what you are missing.

Yup. And it's incredibly benign. The "controversial" lyric is "And I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don't need him around anyhow." Probably set back civil rights a decade or so.

Agreed.

"Hey! Let's look for controversy in a 20 year old song!"

They prolly didn't have time for the nine minute solo in "Freebird"

Skynyrd is one of my favorite bands and I like Sweet Home Alabama.

I thought the segment was meant to give props to southern rock music/artists.

For that purpose there was certainly a more appropriate choice considering Charlie Daniels helped create the genre and in his song acknowledged the very guys on stage last night.

But then again the Grammys did give the very 1st Heavy metal grammy to Jethro Tull, (who's album that year was called Heavy Metal) instead of Metallica so it's a credible awards show in my book

Yeah I aggree with targa911S. Very, very few women can pay proper tribute to Janis. When she was on her game back in the day she could belt-out song like her soul was being ripped from her body. A powerhouse of emotion. Not a huge fan of Melissa but probably one of the best performances of the night.

And speaking of singers that can't sing, who knew Jamie Fox could?? Man! I could not believe it!
