Who’s Your Favorite Author? Why?
Who are your favorite authors? Those would be the ones that you would want to read everything they have ever done. Share you picks and tell us all why. Who knows, we may find a few new favorites. Here are mine:
Malcolm Gladwell – Tipping Point – ties in how micro influences macro and Blink – rationalizes my gut instincts, his New Yorker Articles are great as well. Michael Crieghton – such a variety, early stuff is fantastic (Great Train Robbery, Andromeda Strain, Eaters of the Dead), all his stuff is well written – can’t put it down when you start, read about 75% of his stuff. Kurt Vonnegut – truly the most prolific social anthropologists of our time, able to provide fantastic ideas into social explanations. I have read everything he has written. Desmond Morris – book on Human Sexuality “Intimate Behavior”, “The Human Zoo” and “The Naked Ape” will make you understand people on a new level. Fritjof Capra – not the first to tie interdisciplinary, but most prolific, provides great insight into reality.

Tobias Wolff - The best author of the last 50 years, IMO. "Back in the World" even has a story about a 911 Targa!
Robert Olen Butler - "Tabloid Dreams" is probably my favorite short story collection. Thomas Harris - Have always really enjoyed his writing style and word selection. John Sundman - His work in "Cheap Complex Devices" is really great.

Lube,
I think it'd have to be Hermann Hesse for me at this point for a number of reasons. Vonnegut is pretty dang good too.

currently plowing through Wilbur Smith novels (start with Birds of Prey). many of my long time favorites get stale as they try to force new books to fulfill a contract. Ken Follet, Clive Cussler, Michael Creighton,

Ayn Rand, she makes you think... Atlas Shrugged by Rand is the 2nd most read book in the world after the Bible.
Ernest K Gann, one of the best aviation authors in the world. Clive Cussler, popcorn for the mind but fun reading. JA

It's a toss up between John Irving (World According to Garp, Ciderhouse Rules, Owen Meany, many others) and Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged and the Fountainhead).

I read a lot, mostly because I haven't had TV in 15 years, and love it.
My reading is either technical, or mindless fun. So, I read lots of different magazines, half of which relating to Porsches, the rest consuming all my other interests. Most of the books I read are just for mindless fun, and the tops of the list are Clive Cussler & Steven King. I read from many authors but I list those two as the authors I read & enjoy the most when shutting down the brain is the objective.
