Any good MB boards?

I'm looking at buying a 500 SL - an apparent good deal that came my way. Are there any good MB boards where I can verify some facts about the car and ask some questions?

No, I'm not selling the SC.......

Edit: aarghh. why can't I edit the thread title after posting!!  I meant Merc Benz boards.

Yup, here's one of the best: http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php3?forumid=18

BTW, what year is that 129? Lots's of issues with certain years to be aware of. Right down to the Biodegradable wire insulation thoughout the car that....well, biodegrades. No kidding.

LeRoux Strydom 02-24-2005 10:14 AM

The model year is one of those things that I need to verify. The car is a USA import to South Africa. I only talked to the guy who owns the shop, not the owner of the car. The shop guy thinks it may be a 92.

The VIN is BFA66E7MF025492. Does this tell you anything?

Pray tell more about the issues.

Here's a post from today:

"The 129 came out in mid-1989 as a 1990 model. All of them were manufactured in Bremen, Germany.

Chrysler and Daimler-Benz merged in late '98. It was to be a "merger of equals" but since then it is clear that Daimler is in charge of Chrysler.

The '97 and '98 500s are arguably the most desirable of the V-8 cars, since these were the last two years of the highly-regarded M119 engine. The M113 engine which replaced it in the '99 model year and continues in production today is a good engine -- it simply doesn't have the reputation of the older engine.

Anyone who is on a budget and would like to do there own repairs should consider a '95 or older model, in my view, since expensive tools are not required to read many of the diagnostic codes. I would not avoid model years '93 to '95, but be aware that the wiring harness will probably have to be replaced once in the cars life."

No mention of '92. If you post on the board I mentioned you'll get great info back.

juanbenae 02-24-2005 10:44 AM

if you want BM info, try "scat" in a google search.

DonDavis 02-24-2005 11:57 AM

"Bowel Movement" sites??? Whatever, dude. :D

Yes, the 8th digit is "M" which means the car is a '91.

On the board, it says BM, but when you open the thread it says MB, strange.

DonDavis 02-24-2005 09:35 PM

Yeah, it's one of those 'gotcha' things. Screw up on the thread title and you can't change it. It takes an act of "Wayne Congress" to have them edit titles.

Makes for good laughs though. This being OT, I was a little apprehensive about clicking. I had one eye closed and the other squinted really close to closed, just in case.:D

This is an interesting site to visit, that looks rather official: http://www.mercedes-benz-usa.com/
Information there may not be appropriate for your model year of interest though, most info appears to be for recent model years.

Actually you can edit the title if you do it before someone reads the post.

LeRoux Strydom 02-25-2005 08:43 AM

You guys crack me up, honestly. The BM is from fast typing, and I was too late trying to edit...

If the VIN says its a 91, why does everyone and their dog tell me that the 129 only came out in 92?

I still puzzled about the year model. Is there an online resource where I can check the VIN sequences for the build years?

Thanks

LeRoux

RickM 02-25-2005 09:07 AM

The 129 came out in 1990 to replace the 107 / 560SL here in the US.

Rick

Thanks for the info. I found another number:

WDB1290661F025492

Does this tell you anything? What's the source of your info?

Leroux,

Here's the site with info on many Mercedes models. Pretty interesting. http://home.hiwaay.net/~gbf/mbmodels.html

The 10th digit is "1" which indicates a '91 model.

juanbenae 02-25-2005 08:49 PM

so what'd "scat" into google find yee?
