747 Large Cargo Freighter

Take one 747-400 passenger aircraft and cut away the upper fuselage at the main deck floor beams. Then cut the tail off and adding a couple of rather large hinges. Splice in a larger bonnett, add another X foot long section to the vertical stabilizer, add a huge machined (flat) pressure bulkhead (what I'm working on) just aft of the cockpit and viola, the worlds largest cargo aircraft (by volume).

A machined bulkhead? No kidding, is there not room for the typical hemispherical built-up style?

Yep, machined. It's friggin' HUGE!!!

You got it...no room for the longest of the 787 derivatives fuselage to fit with a traditional pres. bulkhead.

I've never been on a mod. program quite like this. Fun stuff.

Why reinvent the wheel? Why don't you use one of these?

Kidding aside, how do they compare in size?

Cool project. I look forward to hearing more about it. BTW, how much will that machined bulkhead weigh?

The 747-LCF will be the largest in volume.

Over 17,000 pounds.

17,000 lbs? Wow. Is it possible to make a pressurized bulkhead out of composites or is the weight not that important?

Or on second thought do you need extra weight upfront to offset the weight of the hinged rear in order to maintain CoG?
