I know this fella. Nice enough guy but I think he has issues. He's, maybe, 5'4" and weighs 160. Built like a tank and has tatoos up and down his arms and neck. He is a triple black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I have never ever seen him in a regular size car. He used to drive a 70s T-Bird lowrider. After that he drove a quad cab Ford 4WD. Now, he's got a Hummer with non-standard huge wheels (maybe 24s?). What do you think - Napoleon complex?

Thats an Illinois plate, right? I worked in IL for a few weeks earlier this year and I swear that more than half of the license plates were personalized where I was at.

Funny, I've been thinking of buying a surplus military Humvee. They go cheap and need lots of work but I figure it'd make a nice tow vehicle. I've heard they are too large for serious trail riding though. The H2 is a joke as it has none of the features of a real hummer.

Christian,

Can you buy a surplus one? I thought the deal between AMG General and the governemt was that they had to be destroyed after there usuable service life was up..

The diesel in the Military ones though makes it a much different vehcile that the Civilian gas ones.

I am not even going to say anything about the H2 or Suburban with a different body I mean.

Bill

The US surplus are all destined for foriegn militaries I believe.

Only the first year or two of the civilian model had a gas motor. All the others had the same diesel motor the military uses.

New basic models sell for over $120K and functional high mileage units usually still go for $50K or more.

I know all too well since the porsche dealership where I worked as a tech at for a few months was also the only hummer dealer for tampa.

If well maintained they are almost bulletproof but a neglected one can cost some serious $$$ to repair.

The brakes and hub transmissions are where the civies usually get burned bad when maintaining their H1s. The engines also suffer from injection pump issues that literally costs thousands of dollars to repair.

Go to the Knob Creek shoot in KY. There is a guy that brings half a dozen old military surplus units there to sell. Cheapest one the last time I was there (2 yrs ago) was $35k, IIRC. All of them had been beat to ****.

nine14 on the 914 BBS has an older Humvee that he got for less than 10K with some motor (desiel) issues. I think he rebuilt the injection and it's fine now. Smokes a little but it's smog exempt. He has a great parts hauler. The thing is a beast, but he's young.

I currently work at the local Caddy Hummer Buick and GMC dealer parts dept. Two days ago I was just flipping through the H1 parts book and punching PNs in. A rear brake caliper was more than $800 at list price, and we just shipped an oil and trans oil cooler to Maui...cost was $600 after tax.

I'd buy a military Humvee...I kinda liked it when I drove it while in the Army Just gotta find one good enough to fix up.

Even if gas was $2/gl, that would mean that the gas tank would hold about 200 gallons or the size of almost 4 oil drums and weigh about 1600lbs! Thats as much as a Targa!. I think that "someone" was yank'n you.

Everytime I see a Hummer I marvel at the ability of marketing - seemingly smart, well-to-do folks buying into a place in history. This is the type of thing that everyone will look back at and think "what the ***** was that all about?"

My 6yr old likes them, but he thinks they are cool cuz they can roll over anything. He also whipes his boogers on my shirt and still misses tye pot and pees on the floor so I guess there is no accounting for taste!
