computer guys-I can't open a folder

I've got a virus (Trojan32) I'm trying to remove on my beater computer. It's in "System Volume Information" but it won't allow me to open that folder. Avast can't touch the virus either. Is there a program that enables one to open folders that normally aren't allowed to be opened?

Thanks!

Are you logged in as a user with Administrator rights?

Also, what OS?

try starting in command prompt only or in safe mode.

It's XP and I'm the only user and administrator.

The following assumes you're using XP Pro on a home network, NOT on a domain...

1.) Right-click the System Volume Information folder.
2.) Click [Properties] and select the [Security] tab. Click [Add]
3.) Enter the name of the user you are allowing access to the folder (YOUR user name).
4.) Click [OK], and then click [OK].
5.) Double-click the System Volume Information folder to open.

Boot in "safe mode" and you should be able to delete it...

No security tab-only sharing. I tried safe mode as well, to no avail.

It's possible I somehow eradicated the virus as it doesn't come up on scan and the folder it was supposedly in highlights as empty.

Thanks anyways for the suggestions.

Sebring,

Try following the appropriate steps listed here.

Very Cool! Thanks for the info. It explains a LOT. I reloaded XP and my problem went away. I couldn't figure out why because I didn't do a total reformat. But-because I reloaded, I did away with all my restore points which are contained in the System Volume Information folder. Once those went away-so did the virus which was attached to a restore file. Slimy b*stards.

Thanks again for the valuable info.
