Optimal computer monitor distance

Anybody know how far a computer monitor "should" be away from your face? It seems that most people sit really close to their monitors due to the traditional desk set ups that most of us have.

I have a 17" CRT monitor.

Thoughts?

I measured w/ tape measure from the monitor and look out the corner of my eye: 20" sitting upright and leaning on the desk; 32" in the lounged (normal) position. I do have a deep corner-type desk, but I could see where a normal desk would put your eyes a bit closer. Also w/ 17" CRT.

I would say it depends on your vision. I find that people who can't see or refuse to wear glasses are always within a few inches of their monitors. I wear contacts and sit at least 18 inches away. The good thing about monitors/computers is you can adjust the zoom in most programs so you can sit farther away.

I'm at arms length... Not sure how long my arm is though... :-)

I've heard that about 24" is good. Maybe I should get a job where I don't stare at a computer all day! I hear that race car drivers make a decent living!

On tv's and movie screens, the "golden rule" is 2 1/2 times the horizontal length of the screen. Hope that helps!
