Even though it's a beta, it's rock stable and will get rid of just about any spyware.

Thanks, Neil. I installed it and followed their recommendations. Ran it and it found three items, recommended quaranteening one and ignoring two.

AdwCleaner?

Has anyone used this? Is the free download safe? Does it help with pop-ups?

ADWcleaner is safe.

Whether it fixes your problem or not really depends on what type of pop ups you are getting.

Some are due to an infected machine, others are simply ads on sites.

For the later you need an ad blocker. I use uBlock Origin. www.ublock.org

Holy crap, what an ancient thread (especially when you consider it's for computer stuff, 11 years is like 50 in computer years).

Flatbutt, what are you looking for? I wouldn't take any of the advice in this thread that came before your post because it's all outdated. Some may still apply somewhat, but a lot of things have changed in the past 11 years.

I don't think he's upgraded his PC in at least 15 years so this thread should still be relevant.:D

It wouldn't hurt to run Malwarebytes regularly in his case then either.

Close bro. I just installed a new HD and am looking for new blockers.

I resurrected the thread because I'm a good citizen and always do a search first. ;)

Happens, they are open source not for profit, certificates cost and someone may have forgotten to renew.

You can install direct from google for Chrome, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en

Or from Mozzilla for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

Funny you should mention it. I just started getting pop ups, but only when I'm on this site, on this computer, which is fairly new. No problems on the old computer.

Adguard Adblocker
Works perfectly for Chrome or Mozilla.
You can whitelist the sites you will accept popups for.

I use this...

Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File

widebody911 10-02-2016 04:31 PM

It's very simple: Install these. ublock uses a hosts-based blocking list with pattern matching, which is much easier than trying to maintain your own hosts file. This will handle 99.9999% of what a "normal" user will encounter, even if you like to surf inappropriate sites.

+1 for Ghostery and Noscript. I use these on desktop, laptops, and my mobile devices. It really helps on mobile because of the ridiculous levels of tracking/tagging systems on sites now.
