BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.

Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.

Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.

State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him

QUESTION: Slow news day and it's made up, or will it turn out to be true?

Iron County is in the UP, just over the Wisconsin border, correct?

Who cooks dinner with a loaded 9mm just lying around? This guy should be watched... he'll win a Darwin Award someday.

I had that thought myself.......why?

He could have been cooking his last meal.

If this happened at all, my bet is the guy was screwing around w/ the weapon and accidentally fired or dropped it. He's using fluffy as a scapecat.

I know 2 cats that would like to shoot me right now....though I'd return the favor. Frickin' $250 vet bill....

Stray cats are a real problem around the shop here. They crap everywhere and the smell in the summer is overwhelming. They crawl under cars and have kittens that end up dying and smell like h3ll.
Here's my solution to the stray cats in my parking lot.

Kevin, just keep a few spayed/neutered cats around the shop. They'll chase away others from their territory.

Even better, there are orgs that will spay/neuter the cats around already if you trap 'em. They'll even lend you the traps. Then you just release them where you found them.

We've given some thought to that idea. But honestly, I already have a full time job and not very interested in becoming a animal control officer also. One of the contributing factors here is a crazy ole cat lady who comes around 5:00 am everyday and feeds the strays. She's been told to stop but seems to forget by the next day. The local PD has far better things to do than enforce a no trespassing order thats been issued. We've considered renting a gaurd dog but thats like replacing a molehill with a mountain. I'm fond of the boa constrictor idea.

Actually all you'd have to do is trap/fix the first batch, then get the crazy ol' lady to feed them and empty the litter boxes.... ;)

I have a stray cat problem as well, since all the yards around mine have dogs, my yard is the local cat hangout. I've even caught them on the hood of my car in my garage!

I've been tempted to set up a cat-a-pult - a simple spring-loaded device which would fling them into someone else's yard.

My cats get into the garage and leave paw prints all over my saratoga top and windshield. Drives me nuts!

Nothing worse than a cat with a gun.
