What's your budget like? Downtown SF, especially around Union Square, ain't cheap. The Holiday Inn at the Fisherman's Wharf can be a really good deal.

The Maxwell looks good from the pix but I've never stayed there so I can't recommend it. I was going to suggest the Argonaut Hotel. It's a little more than the Maxwell but it's a nice place.

Check out Frog's Leap Winery in Napa. Excellent Sauvignon Blanc.
