Best all around tire...least money.

Ok,
After sliding sidways down I-25 this morning after a couple of inches of snow...my Subaru needs new shoes..for as little investment possible. Off brand, name brand..what ever..

The best winter tires I have ever had, and I've tried quite a few. Are: Dunlops Winter Sport M3..
They are a studless snow tire and are very quiet (considering). They also seem to wear exceptionaly well and have reasonably good dry road traction.

Another tire that is less snow specific but still works very well in the slick is: BFGoodrich Traction T/A, comes in many speed ratings and has amazing dry road grip as well as some pretty impressive snow ability.

Falken Ziex 512's are pretty decent and are cheap. I just put them on my daughters 924 and my wifes 325i. The 924 has done well in the snow with them. The Bimmer is still a squirrley unless the car has some weight in it. They seem to receive pretty good ratings if you search the tire reviews.

I thought Kumho Excsta's were the cheap/good tire of record , No?

I'm very, very happy with Sumitomo HR200s on my SL. $42 a pop. Good wear, traction wet/dry and quiet.

Tim Hancock 03-14-2005 11:20 AM

Not sure Len, but I thought the Kuhmos were supposed to to be awful in the wet and or snow. I have never tried them though, I could be wrong.

Tire Rack uses customer feedback to rate tires. Lots of survey and reviews posted.

In the Ultra High Perfomance / All Season they have a comparison chart:

Here's an example tire review and customer feedback.

Bad winter tires sometimes turn out to be great summer tires.

Wait a few weeks.

I burned mine out on the BMW in less than 6 months...

Bridgestone Potenza RE750's have been working really well for me.

Wow, I've had mine on my SL daily driver for almost two years. I'm a pretty aggressive driver and the car is nearly as heavy as an Explorer. That said, I went through tires like crazy on BMW 7....especially fronts.

If you live in a place with more than a little snow and ice (like Colorado), a second set of dedicated winter tires is a good idea.

Figure the value of your car, not to metion your life, and an extra set of Sport M3s is a good idea..
