Selling a car in Ca?
I'm planning on selling my 1988 M5 but the CATs look pretty bad so I don't want to hassle with SMOG. How can I sell the car without smogging it?
Thanks, Jay

If you sell it in California you are required to provide a smog cert, so sell it to someone outside of california.
I hope you are going to disclose this to a prospective buyer. Michael

Thanks and yes I'm being completely open about the condition of the car. What if I sold the car as a non operational car?

I think it will make the new owner have to jump through hoops at the DMV to get it re-registered.

Went to DMV and figured it out. There's a transfer of title only and buyer will have to get it smogged before it can be registered. Basically releasing me of liability and the responsiblity of getting the car smogged. FWIW, I'm selling the car cheap and giving the buyer all info, good and bad, about the car. I really hate to see it go but I need to work on the Porsche.

That's good to know, Jay. My understanding was that it's the seller's responsibility that a car will pass a smog check, but if it was agreed to be the buyer's responsibility that's okay. Obviously, that should be in writing.
As a precaution, I'd get it in writing from the buyer that he agrees to accept the car "as is" with respect to the car's non-compliance and take responsibility to make the car smog legal himself.
