more fish tank....

renewed my fish tank a few weeks ago, i took out the teakwood i had as it took up too much space.
now there are a couple shelters to accomodate my 2 oscars and 3 pacus, the little one is 8+ years old....i forget.
the oscars own the tank....they do what they want but generally hang out by the grass pad, the 2 big pacus like to hide under the shelter on the right, and the little onehangs with all 4.

They're looking good, bell. Is the fish that is in the center of the bottom photo the one in your avatar?

That is a neat looking fish! What kind is it? We used to have a large coy pond with all sorts of coy in it. It was pretty cool, but a pain to maintain.

the 2 with the orange and dark spotting are oscars and a little over a year old, they are 7-8 inces long.
the 2 grey w/red bellies are red belly pacu, about 6 months.....a relative to the pirhana (sp?), and as big as my oscars already.
the 5th little fish is also a pacu, he lived in a fish tank at our old shop for at least 7-8 years.....the best we can figure. i brought him home a year and a half ago so he's almost 10 years, he's a trooper.

Bell,

I love your Oscars! Had a nice pair myself, each weighing about 2 pounds, but one died, causing the other one to sulk and deteriorate, 'till it also died about a week later.

Changed to a community tank for the last three years but am thinking of going back to Oscars. The only con is that I have a tank with thriving plant life, and we all know what oscars do to plants...

I see that, over and above the panorama stuck to the rear glass, you have a couple of plants in your tank - are they real or plastic?

Cheers!

Willem Fick

Bell,

That is a lot of potenital "attitude" in that tank !!!
I have had both of those species before and I trained one Oscar to jump up out of the top of the tank to receive a treat

Then I moved on to salt water and reef tanks.....

Good job, they look great!

willem.....the grass looking thing is a 14"x14" pad, plastic mesh hidden under the rocks with the "grass" coming up out of it.....about $15 at petsmart.
the other plants are also plastic and they're burried pretty good and in corners, they seem determined to dig up the pad so they haven't messed with the others yet.
they fight sometimes.....and sometimes i hear some serious water moving around when in another room......it all boils down to the food chain

Bell,

Though it couldn't be real!

Mine used to dig up the entire tank at night, and also got into the occasional fight. They also had a smallish round pebble which they would carry around the tank at time in what almost resembled a game of fooball. They also took food from my hand by leaping from the tank, and I fondly remember the day my uninitiated girlfriend had to be coaxed back into the house after one of the "@$#% piranhas" nipped at her hand.

Man I miss them! To me they were more like dogs than fish!
