Ads, what ads?

I don't remember the last time I fast forwarded through a commerical. As long as they don't f*** with the 30 second skip, TIVO can do what they want.

Doesn't seem to matter. It doesn't stop you from fast forwarding through the ad it just adds a little feature with a dohicky while you ff.

What they're working on is exactly that - to put an ad in when you ff. That way they know they have your attention. Looks like they're testing this in various areas, and most likely they'll use it everywhere once they get the bugs worked out.

Skip,

You need to go

here

and get some of the codes. To enable the 30 seconds skip...
Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select - Toggles 30 second skip mode. This turns the Skip to End button into a 30 second skip button.

Have fun.

Neil,

Thanks much!

Thom,

We will figure out a way around it! I used to hate commercials, now I just FF the Tivo and get on with the program.

Hey, how many people here have put an additional hard drive, or a larger on in their Tivo??? Getting ready to do it and hope for some input.

Joe,

I replaced the HD in my TIV, it's pretty easy to do.

Go to this site and download the boot cd (MFS TOOLS 2) and follow the instructions for your particular setup/desire.

Rather than spend $20 on a $2 piece of plastic, I just pulled my old hard drive and replaced it with a 160gb Seagate drive on which I copied ALL my old tv shows that I had saved. It took me about 30 minutes of actual work to get everything setup and about 2 or so hours to transfer all my shows from one drive to the next.

Actually, now that I think about it, I didn't mount the second drive because I didn't want to wait to get the HD mounting bracket.

Neil,

I have the book Hacking Tivo, both 1 & 2 and they come with the CD. I booted it using the cd and "approved" the drive but just not sure it worked right. I have a series 2 box so assuming that it has only one HD inside and wanted to add a 160 gig second drive.

Am VERY familiar with computers and the drive was formatted using NTFS (w2000) then did it using the CD so assume it was reformatted.

Did you backup your orginal drive first and if so how? Work OK?

Thanks for the help, need more room on my Tivo!

Joe, just go to the site above and follow the instructions. I think the programmer simplified the copying process so that it is easier than the older methods and FREE.

Am VERY familiar with computers and the drive was formatted using NTFS (w2000) then did it using the CD so assume it was reformatted.
There is a warning at the very end of Hinsdale instructions that states
"I have Windows NT/2000/XP: Do not boot into Windows NT/2000/XP with your original TiVo drives attached as a signature can be attached to the drive that will corrupt your TiVo drive."
So my new drive never saw XP. I installed it and booted directly into MFS tools

Did you backup your orginal drive first and if so how? Work OK?
I backed it up using step 7 of the instructions. There are two kinds of backs up. 1. Your personal Tivo box settings with all your serial numbers and 2. Your tv shows.
I backed up my personal settings onto my PC and then I copied my small hard drive completely onto the new one.

If you want to keep both your old drive and the new drive, you first need to open up your box and see if you need a mounting bracket. Some of the Tivo units already have them. My Directivo didn't. Then you need to follow the Hinsdale instructions that matches your hardware configuration... ie 1 or 2 drives, copy old shows or start fresh etc.

Thanks for the help, need more room on my Tivo!

Tivo is going to relive the history of beta-max if they aren't careful. Being the best doesn't automatically guarantee you success.

Tivo has been in financial trouble since day one. Great product with true name recognition, but still a small market share a tons of hurdles to overcome. Sad...
