The Problem With Liberals

I watched a HBO Documentary on Air America the Liberal radio talk show network last night....it became very obvious to me that Liberals are arrogant in that they think anybody who doesn't see it their way is a stupid rednecked moron, becuase they aren't as enlightened as Liberal are...What is truly sad is that Liberals have preconceived notions as to the Political and Social course the country should take, yet they don't listen to what people want and need.. This is what is marginalizing Liberals to the far end of the political spectrum.. and this elitism is only going to make their plight worse...

True, but the same can be said for the right, particularly with it's religious influence. There has to be a middle ground, but seems everyone is polarizing instead.

You know I get the same view from reading some of the con posts. Anyone who doesn't see it the con way is blind, stupid and irresposible. Cons have the same problem of not listening to what the people want. Hence the farily clear divide across the nation in every community.

Now did you write that to get this answer. C'mon fess up.

Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains.

I'm w/ you Tabs. The elitist approach and the contempt w/ which they marginalize and demonize those with whom they disagree is their undoing. There's very little room to agree to disagree w/ the most fanatical (and therefore most likely to be in the spotlight) liberals.

I don't think liberal ideas or ideals are necessarily "wrong" but I don't wholeheartedly subscribe to them, so I'm a heretic and must be burned.

A more temperate dialogue (w/o knee-jerk accusations of Nazism, fascism, intolerance, stupidity ... all of which are struck-dumb-ironic when used by liberals to silence their adversaries) would be beneficial.

In our microcosm here, there are plenty of those on the Left who do not deign to cast their pearls before we conservative swine, or throw ad hominem barbs like so much ink to cover defeat. THESE are the guys with whom I've had some great and enlightening exchanges -- even though we'd probably never "agree" on 80% of stuff.

Liberalism without the elitism bullshyt (which really comes across like insecurity IMHO) is a worthy ideology. It's its unskilled practitioners and their scorched-earth, polarizing chiaroscuro that sully it.

And, yes, I'd lay the same epitaph at the doorsteps of those conservatives that demean their ideology through their means. Think of Ann Coulter as the conservative mirror to most of liberal, shrill (read mainstream) commentary.

Steve - is the third time the charm?

"Cons have the same problem of not listening to what the people want." No, Cons have the "problem" of not telling the people what they want; what they need. Hail the collective!! :D

If you disagree with a liberal, you're unenlightened and/or ignorant; if you disagree with a conservative/neocon, you're a anti-american heathen terrorist.

stevepaa 04-01-2005 11:25 AM

Sorry, the connection was poor and I stopped it here, but I guess not on the receiving end.

scottmandue 04-01-2005 11:33 AM

IMHO the problem with people is that they are obsessed with judging, stereotyping, and pigeon holing everyone that is not like them. If we could do away with all this labeling and beings so concerned about placement of blame and instead focus on what improvements we can all agree on it would make for a better future for everyone.

juanbenae 04-01-2005 11:37 AM

is this another april fools post?

I guess I'll have to find another conservative to hate. You occasionally make too much sense, JP.

I'd say our new member, Steve, falls into the category of an informed, rational and respectful conservative (unlike myself, of course). Techweenie was like that also.

Crackpots are everywhere, including both liberalism and conservatism. I kinda cringe at them, but I also kinda respect their passion as long as they don't go over the top. Indeed, some posts on the nearby thread related to removing folks from a presidential audience because of what they might do, made me want to fly right off the handle. Just because I can. This is, after all, America. The idea that someone has to talk softly and begin each sentence with "Yes, that is an excellent point you just made and I would add that it is very different from mine due to the following observations...." is just not true. I like respectful people too, but respect is not a necessary condition to speech freedom. Not in my country. If someone wants to say something in an obnoxious fashion.......

And besides. While all you cons disagree with most of the way I think, I can report to you something you already know if you've thought about it. Liberals are passionate about these subjects. They really don't want to accept a decision that sounds like "Well, I'd like to be concerned about the environment, but those concerns just get in the way of making money, so I think we will just continue to trash the environment and leave it up to the next generation to fix." If 51% of society were to make that decision and impose it as national policy, some liberals would not just go away and be quiet in defeat. They'd wage a war on the enemies of the environment. Call them lawbreakers. Call them liberals. Call them anything you wish. Point out that their actions are not the will of the majority. They honestly believe that the survival of a species of animals is not something we can decide to deny because we prefer the benefits of the industrial actions that are causing the extinctions.

Yep, libs are passionate. Maybe they think they have some important issues to address, whether corporations and their lemming supporters like it or not. Like the pro-ANWR drilling poster says:

"How many species do you really need?"

If you agree with liberals, you want everyone to have a free ride. If you agree with conservatives, you install a bigger/better motor in your ride.;)

Jeez, Thom, I guess I'm an unenlightened, ignorant, anti-american heathen terrorist. :D

Oh, and cryptofascist, can't forget cryptofacist.

No, they get a single seater fast bike, they're the only person that matters.

I guess being "all things" includes being some of the less than savory things...

Ah, the crosses I must bear.

It's not that we're not razzing you due to lack of material or anything.... :D

But I know where you're coming from. The Big Irish Catholic Family(tm) unspoken rule is -- if you're not getting your stones crushed, you don't feel loved. I tell my girlfiends that my picking on them is a sure sign that I love them; it's how I show affection. It's when the abuse stops, I tell them, that they have to worry.

Come to think of it, I've got a lot of ex-girlfriends. Oh well, a freckled Irishman can't change his spots.

M: Look, I CAME HERE FOR AN ARGUMENT, I'm not going to just stand...!!
Q: OH, oh I'm sorry, but this is abuse.
M: Oh, I see, well, that explains it.
Q: Ah yes, you want room 12A, Just along the corridor.
M: Oh, Thank you very much. Sorry.
Q: Not at all.
M: Thank You.
(Under his breath) Stupid git!!
