Unhappy This year's hurricane season

Stormy forecast for US Gulf

WEATHER forecasts in the US have predicted that this year's hurricane
season will be similar to or worse than the last, which closed many
ports, damaged oil and gas platforms and disrupted cruise ship
itineraries. While the official season does not begin for two months,
storm forecaster William Gray has predicted another active series of 13
storms, seven of which will become hurricanes and three of those
intense. “All of the information we have collected and analysed through

March indicates that the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season will be an
active one,'' said Gray, a professor at Colorado State University. The
long-term average is about 10 tropical storms that develop into six
hurricanes, two of them with intense winds above 177km/h. Last year, the
tropics produced 15 named storms that grew into nine hurricanes, six of
them intense. The National Hurricane Center’s annual forecast will be
released on 16 May.

Yet it's still unlikely that the burning of millions of tons of hydrocarbons each day is affecting anything...

Classic!

Here's an idea... Hurricane's and other natural disasters (like ice ages) happened long before the man began "destroying" the earth. The earth has always ebb ands flowed. And will continue to do so.

Tell you what, if you're so worried about it, crush that Porsche and any other ICE vehicles you own (else someone else start using them) and buy (and use) a human powered vehicle. Surely you're not going to argue that our "antiques" are good for the environment... Especially the way we drive them.

If you're going to talk the talk then you'd best be off walking the walk (no pun intended).

The number of Hurricanes runs in about 40 year cycles... And we have been in a lul compared to the '30s, '40s and '50s..

Just think how much has been built in hurricane prone areas of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts since 1965.

I have no argument with the idea of using less fossil fuels. Heck; we get a good discount from the auto insurance company because the wife and I drive less than 5,000 per year. But, at the same time, even a self regulating "organism" like the world can be overwhelmed, at least temporarily. With the emerging economies of India and China, both vying for the same fuel sources that are now shared by the ROW, the situation has to get worse. No one can deny the problems in places like Los Angeles when it comes to hydrocarbon fuels. So, where I do think the earth continually renews itself, I do wonder how much longer it can continue, given the increasing population pressure.

I have an open mind when it comes to man's effect on the environment. I cannot make a statement for or against "global warming" or "global cooling", but I do think it is a possibility. I cannot rule it out!!

I think the reality is that the global climate is alot more complex than people (especially those with agendas) like to believe. Last year's active hurricane season had nothing to do with "global warming" (according to the experts).

I fully believe that localized warming is occuring around the globe. I am not convinced that it is caused totally by man. Here in Huntsville, NASA has a pretty large atmospheric science division (I forget the actual name at the moment) and alot of the data they are gathering regarding global temperatures contradicts the doosmday predictions that some people are making. IIRC, there is alot of evidence that the *overall* global temperature has not changed significantly (something like .1C) in the last 10 or 15 years. What we are seeing is some localized hot spots while other areas are cooling.

Complex issue, but very interesting.

If you dig up weather records from the last 150 years - and count the number of hurricanes - and consider the destruction that will happen long term patterns repeat - half of Florida will wish they never left Ohio...

gaijindabe - the other half wishes they'd go back to Ohio too

I'm planning on buying a generator and 2 more small 12v->110v inverters.

I'll second that one...make it soon!

I'm taking estimates on storm panels all month.

Grey stated last yr that the issue is that the storms are being pushed in closer to the coast.. and that this is part of a long term 20-40yr trend. How the homeowner's insurance co's can deal with a few bill$ loss every yr is beyond me.

meanwhile Fla property values are still rising.. go figure.
