Help with writing to CDR's please.???

I have a CDR drive and cannot for the life of me remember how to format a CD! I have both adaptec and Nero and don't see a one hit wonder button for either. What am I missing? I just want to format the c0cksckuer!!!

You don't 'format' CDR's per se. You just write to them, then 'fixate' the session. Some digital cameras use CD's, and do a format process, which is basically creating something like a FAT.

What are you trying to do (don't say 'format a CD')

I back up my Quickbooks to a CDRW. I just put in this new drive and want to make sure it works. When I try to back up it says "Drive not valid". When I try to access it through adaptec it says "drive not supported". But the manual clearly say it is! Arggghhhh

Should add, the drive says it is happy and "working properly".

There should be a function to prepare a CDRW (you left out the "W") for re-writing. I use have a CDRW drive, but being such a hard-core leftie, I never use the W function. Is your new CD blank, or does it have stuff on it?

OK, I think I have it, my brother got me a cheapo Ebay drive and it apparently blows goats so I just popped in a Sony and will see. Nostatic, FWIW it's dead easy on a PC too, when the drives function that is

But, Len, don;t you know? Everything ALWAYS functions on a Mac.

They never crash, you never get spam and your programs will do whatever you want them to do...without you even having to tell them what to do! And graphics...did I mention the graphics???

Thom, Excellent!!! Would rather eat dirt than use a Mac but thats just me...

Len, it should give you two options when you open Roxio. One is to "Drag and drop" and the other is to use their program to create a cd. If you "format" the cd as a drag and drop believe you can then copy anything to it without using the Roxio program. YMMV

You may have incompatable media.

Go to the drive manufacturers website and get the latest drivers. The stuff that came in the box is probably out of date.

The manufacturer may also have a list of compatable media to use with their drive.

Don't buy the cheapest media that you can find, shop the circulars and buy name brand stuff when it's on sale and then buy a bit more than you have an immediate need for.

Cheap media = coasters. If you toss half of them then they were really not that cheap in the long run.

Not like I want to see the Mac debate start up again.

I do have to say I just burned 2 CDR's and a DVD on my Mac by

1) sticking in blank media

2) selecting my files

3) hit burn

Burning is integrated into OSX but I still use Roxio Toast, supports shared burners over a network, multiple burners on one computer allowing you to burn different data to different burners simultaneously, etc...

Pretty cool app.

She's all set now. I almost thought I goofed again when my CPU did not recognize EITHER of my two CD drives after the Sony swap in. Then I realized I forgot to jump the "slave" pins on the Sony. Now all is well in Lendaddy land. "Bring it on down to omletville!"
