Montreal hotel recommendations?
Any particular ones that struck you? Great service or great rooms? I've stayed there before but mostly in one of the big chain hotels, and I figured I'd try something that locals would be happy recommending. Downtown would be preferable, but maybe there is a nice one in the old part?
thanks.

Ah, Montreal. Probably my favourite city I've ever been to. The old port is mostly full of smaller b&b's - if that's your thing then you'll have no problem finding one. A favourite of my parents' when they used to visit me there is the Auberge Les Bons Matins (www.bonsmatins.com). It's kind of a trendy, funky place, with lots of bright colours. It's classified as a B&B, but it's a rather large one. They have probably about 15 or 20 guest rooms in 2 or 3 buildings (all adjoined). They make a damn fine breakfast, too. It's a bit out of the way if you're on foot, on a quiet residential street, but less than 5 minute walk to the subway. Then again, by "a bit out of the way", I mean that it would be a 20 minute walk to McGill, 5-10 to the Bell Centre, maybe 20-30 to the Palais de Congres.
Hope this helps. Chris

I stayed at the Le Saint-Sulpic in the historical part of Montreal. A very nice ($) hotel.

The Marriott is Very nice. If you like steak or meat go try out Le Milsa, an Argentine steak house in the area.
Not real excited to have to put up with the people who force speaking french on everyone there but otherwise a nice city. Lots of nice ladies there as well! Used to go there every six months for training and its nice in spring, summer and early fall, and absolute hell in winter. That said they do have a very nice underground area with just about everything there. JoeA

We always stay at the Hotel du Forte. Nice hotel, not too fancy but a really nice place for the money, they include an excellent French style breakfast, and they have parking under the hotel. Nicely located off of St. Catherine.
