In the future America will...........

In the future America will..................produce no durable goods. We will make movies for the world (mostly porn) and export our lawyers to spread havoc and enslave the masses of unwashed heathens in binding contract law.

...............and we will never give up our guns and gas guzzling SUV's.

In the future, America will........recognize that education is the most important key to maintaining a competitive edge in a fiercely competitive, open world market. And gas guzzling SUV's will begin to disappear after America notices that the corporations with the largest earnings are running the country.....and changes are made to address that sickness.

.......and we will never ever give up our guns.

Nothing more important than education? Creativity. This is still the land of opportunity. Thousands of Americans with little formal education have become millionaires. With a system that allows people to take a chance on an idea, to roll up their sleeves, work eighteen hours a day to get going, hire good people, pay them well, we get industrious companies like Pelican Parts that provide goods and services that I open up my wallet for because they make my life better.

In the future America will.....

1- either recognize what makes this country work and continue to be a world leader.

-or-

2- decide that equal opportunity is not fair, equal results are. And to acheive equal results we must regulate! It's not fair when someone has more than another, so we must play Robin Hood. Sounds nice in a pie-in-the-sky-sort of way, but the result is killing the human spirit to excell. Killing creativity. Killing true opportunity. Reducing this once great country to third world status as opening markets like China discover the incredible power of creativity.

I've always admired dreamers.

Seriously though. I'm just not sure how you could not recognize what I'm reporting. While a sole proprietorship has the same legal identity as its owner, corporations are new, independent entitles separate from their owners. They are independent legal creatures in many respects. That's part of the advantage of incorporating. So, they are 'citizens' in a way. They file their own income tax forms, etc. But there is still an important difference. They don't vote.

But wait a minute. These creatures that don't vote most definitely have a stake in public policy formation. They're affected by legislation. And they have FORMIDABLE financial resources. So, they get involved in the process of making public policy. But they don't vote. They don't have to breathe the air or drink the water. Their decision-makers are legally bound to maximize profits in any way that is not illegal (usually).

Awe, nevermind. Let me just ask you this: Are you aware that corporations have a great deal of influence over Congress? I should just take this one step at at time but assuming you admit that Congress is powerfully influenced by corporations, then I'll ask whether you believe that corporate interests might ever be in conflict with whats' good for citizens. Here's a clue: Pollution. Why would a corporation, whose sole agenda is maximizing profits, ever become concerned about pollution? Except to avoid fines, or to avoid public disdain. And please don't pretend that the leaders of a large corporation might leave profits on the table in the interest of public health. They are not allowed to do this, if those profits (obtained by polluting) are there for the taking and are not illegal.

Oh, and I have a beer every weekend. At least one. I'd be honored if you would join me.

I've seen the future at the movies......Bladerunner, Alien and so forth. There is no govenment of real power/importance anymore, everyone works for "the corporation" or is bound by the corporations terms of doing business as usual.

Red Mars and Green Mars are excellent examples of this type of future as well. Mega-Corps are really running the show and national governments are mere "flags of convenience." They are both excellent books. Blue Mars sucks ass though - don't waste your time.

I often wonder what G. Bush is thinking when I see him with his eyes closed and seemingly praying - perhaps he's asking for our forgiveness?

They are the same kind of elite there have always been: with lots at stake, much to lose, a yen for controlling and directing, as well as an overwhelming desire to remain the elite. That is human nature and the way the world has always worked. No conspiracy involved – simply arrogance combined with tunnel vision, money and power.

Davos people control virtually all international institutions, many of the world's governments, and the bulk of the world's economic and military capabilities."

Not disagreeing with you totally and certainly not slighting Wayne or PP. But let's not downplay the role of education - and by that I mean real education, not the grade-inflating ego-stroking that passes for it far too often in this country.
