video editing problems.
 

Im downloading video from my sony DCR P105E and im getting real bad results. heres a snapshot of the sort of video quality im getting.

Can anyone explain this? Ive used the software that comes with the camcorder (imagemixer) and Ive played about with ulead v9 (although not for any real length of time) If i play the video through my tv its fine.

Does it only show up that quality while capturing the video? What if you get it totally captured and saved, does it playback that same way?

I did some vid in Final Cut Pro today, and it looked crappy while importing, but came out fine.

Looks like the compression is cranked up really high.

Not familiar with the pieces of software that you are using.

You want to capture at least 640x480 30fps, uncompressed.

When you finish the edit and save out use mpeg-4 if it's an available option.

First, what are you using to import the video to your computer? Second if you have Ulead V9 you should be able to control the camera and should play back normal in Ulead V9 and record the video from that point on. Next, thing leads me to believe that the recording format you are using is improper. What format are you recording into? Also, it looks like the standard video format is PAL or the camera is PAL ready so my best guess is a video format error or an improper cable connection to the computer.

thanks blokes. bryan, its like this when downloading the clip and after its been converted and played back. Stomachmonkey, mpeg4 is not an option, just 1 + 2. whats the difference between mpeg 1-4 anyway? 84porsche im connecting using the usb port. how is this connection different from the 1394 connection? is the 1394 a better con?

1394 (aka FireWire) is the way to go.

Firewire is definitely the way to go, to agree with Thom. Here is a comparison between the two -

Record in MPEG2 format using Fireware. You can convert to MPEG4 later (aka DIVX) for compression purposes. One hour of MPEG2 will take approximately 3 gigs of hard drive space recorded at 720 x 480 29.97 fps. I always record at higher quality so I can take screen shots and have the option to compress later. The basic process I would suggest is setup your software (ULEAD v9) to record, connect using firewire, playback video and record direct to MPEG2, then you can edit and format the video using other programs from there. Hope this helps.

thanks peeps, im off to PC world to buy a firewire lead and then spend about 2 hours wandering round the entire shop looking at other techy stuff! I love having an excuse to go to PC world!
