I've been an F1 fan for as long as I can remember, at least as early as my first year of high school in '81. I watched the race live on TV that Sunday morning as usual. It tore me up all morning not knowing what happened (I didn't have an internet connection back then, I doubt there was news to find). Finally I called the local TV news guy to see if he knew anything and he told me Senna had died. I was heart broken.
Has anyone heard the story that Senna went out and looked at the Tambarello turn the night before the accident? I also heard he made some strange comments to friends the night before, like he had a bad feeling about the race.
My understanding of the wreck: They were just starting to use a safety car. I think the safety car was a Mercedes being driven by a professional racer. He thought the car was too slow and if I remember correctly, I think he asked to change to something faster like a Porsche. He said he was driving the pace car as fast as he could to try to keep heat in the F1 car tires but he knew he wasn't going fast enough. One theory is the tires were shorter at the lower temperature and after the restart with colder tires, Senna's car bottomed out causing the crash.
