Gore to Get Lifetime Award for Internet...Nope, not kidding.

"Gore to Get Lifetime Award for Internet"

"NEW YORK - Al Gore may have been lampooned for taking credit in the Internet's development, but organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements don't find it funny at all.

In part to "set the record straight," they will give Gore a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the Internet, said Tiffany Shlain, the awards' founder and chairwoman."

enjoy...http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/gore_award

Gore pushed for funding the arpanet at a time when almost nobody else in congress knew or cared to know what it was. I'm sure he had no idea it would morph into what it is today. He, like all politicians, was being opportunistic in claiming responsibility for helping develop the internet.

Even Vint Serf had no idea what the internet would become. My dad was a computer science grad student at UCLA at the time Serf was there setting up UCLA as one of the first three arpanet sites. Serf at the time hoped that someday the net would connect every university in the country to allow easy sharing of information between professors and researchers at all the different schools. It had achieved that by about 1990. Serf never dreamed of anything like Pelican Parts.

Actually I have read somewhere that porn is one of the key drivers of technology on the internet. The Industry supposedly invented the "shopping cart" concept and streaming video. When it becomes "full body immerision tactile" I will finally unplug my PC.
