Is the 911 an icon?

Check this out, guys. I stopped to fuel up at a Marathon on a day trip today. Just happened to have my camera.....pretty cool when our ride is used for an image for pumping gas. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115518348.jpg

I've seen that...

...only prollum is they are pumping the gas into the back in that picture... I guess they are filling up the muffler? :D

Oh Haha 05-07-2005 07:47 PM

I missed that, Chris. I know! It's the secret fuel tank. Oh wait, that would be a Honda.;) BAR Honda. Get it?

I was watching the Disney channel with the kids today - the Proud Family, a cartoon about some jr HS kid and her antics, anyway during the story, a rich HS kid pulls up in a widebody cab with a monster whale tail. Max spotted it immediately. Seems like these cars are used in all sorts of spots when they are looking for a sports car image.

Anyone remember the Friends episode when Ross and Monica's Dad had the 911? What yera car was that?

I remember Joey crashing into a pile of boxes w/ a car cover over them while wearing a P-Car coat and hat...I also remember the episode with Ross and Monica's Dad's car but have no idea what year the steed was...

Yes, it's true...I am a dork. Go ahead...ask me about Cannondales vs. Kliens or Porsches on Sienfeld...go ahead...

I thought Jerry drove a Saab?

Drago 05-07-2005 09:09 PM

He did but there is, in every single episode, some reference to Porsches...and the bike hanging in his hallway is almost always a Cannondale (sometimes with the front fork backwards...who knows why) or a Klein.

Krusty on the Simpsons drives a 911.

Superman 05-09-2005 08:24 AM

Yep, it's an icon. No doubt.

The bicycle in the background at Jerry Seinfeld's apartment started out as a Cannondale until Jerry bought two of the handbuilt Klein Adroit mountain bicycles. All Klein bicycles until about five years ago now were all hand built and masterfully painted by Gary's skilled artists. I picked up a hardtail Klein Pulse at the factory in Chehalis when they were still all hand made there. Klein has since sold the production to Trek where some of the same painters went to Waterloo, Wisconsin to paint the frames on the Klein line.

Rachel on Friends drove an SC, at least in some episodes. Seems like there was an episode where she got out of a ticket by crying, so then Ross tried it. Yeah, yeah, what can I say, after Seinfeld went off the air, Friends was the only sitcom I liked.

I went to a federal installation today and got the visitor parking pass. The image on the pass was a Testarossa. :(

Icon indeed, but what abuse! In my father-in-law's kitchen is a plaque which says, "Retirement is when: If your car doesn't go, you don't have to either." The cartoon car is an SC. :(

I was getting gas the other day when a guy came over to look at my car. "Is it a reaL S?" he asked. "Yes" I replied. He says "That's not just a car man..it's a legend"

Yeah I'd say it's an icon.

The 911 in Friends is an SC, it is Ross and Monicas fathers, but it is in several episodes.
In Sienfeld, my favorite Porsche is the RS in the episode when Jerry steals the Marble Rye from the old lady. Right before he trys to throw it up to George in the window, there is a red RS parked behind him on the street. The car is deffinatly an icon.

How many of Seinfeld's 911s do you think made cameos in the show? It seems there were a lot of subtle things he snuck in over the years.

It was actually given to Monica by her father in the episode where they were cleaning up their parents garage for a move or something. They found out that all of the boxes they saved for the kids were in the garage, the Boxes for Ross were all neatly stacked and covered on shelves, but the boxes for Monica had been used to blockade a water leak in the garage to 'save' the Porsche from moisture, everything in Monica's boxes was ruined. After their dad realized how selfish of an act that was, he gave Monica the Porsche.

There must've been 2 911s in Friends. I remember the episode where Rachel and Ross drove a silver targa, which I believe was given to Rachel by her Dad. There's another episode where Joey pretended to own a Boxster he found the keys for. But to answer the question, yes, the 911 is definitely an icon. Few cars share that title. I see it as related to the question: 'Do cars have souls'? Some do, the 911 being one. Many ads for car insurance feature them, and people with absolutely no interest in cars know what one is. I think that's really cool!

Cheers!

lol oh yea, I remember that, I think I had forgotten that he gave her the car.

Pretty sure this is the same 911, IIRC Ross was originally driving, but for some reason he couldn't keep driving, so Rachel had to take over.
